In honor of National River Month and World Environment Day, we're thrilled to spotlight Pennichuck's Merrimack River Intake Project!? ??As part of our commitment to resilience, we installed a 48” diameter Steel Pipe, stretching a remarkable 215 feet into the river's depths, and a 20 foot long, 48” diameter stainless steel screened intake system. ??The intake screen is maintained utilizing a 1500-gallon airburst system. ?? Amidst the ebb and flow of construction, our existing intake station continued to be operational, providing uninterrupted service to our community. ??Through dedication and innovation, this project wasn't just about pipes and screens—it was about securing a year-round second source of raw water, allowing us to withdraw up to our permitted allowance of 30 MGD. ?? Our team overcame challenges of fluctuating river flows and unpredictable conditions due to the significant rainfall events that occurred. ??In the end, the Merrimack River Intake Project isn't just a feat of engineering—it's a testament to our commitment to resiliency, and a promise to safeguard our water resources for generations to come. ?? Awesome to see this work by our team in print led by Clementine Chirol, with Nigel Pontee, Charlotte Thompson, Hachem Kassem and Ivan Haigh. Saltmarsh restoration using managed realignment often includes excavation of simplified tidal creek networks, but their design is based on limited evidence. We monitored 10 restored tidal creek systems in the UK over up to 20 years using lidar. We found that external conditions (e.g., tidal range and estuarine sediment concentration) and local conditions (e.g., site elevation and soil compaction) control how easily creeks can form and determines if engineering efforts such as creek excavations are worth considering. We propose a new conceptual model of creek design and evolution in managed realignment sites in the UK and updated guidance for tidal creek network design and implementation at managed realignment sites. It comes as no surprise that the city who is home to Utah's burgeoning tech scene is also one of the state's leaders in pavement preservation. Lehi is widely known as the home of the Silicon Slopes, but many don't consider the infrastructure challenges that have accompanied its explosive growth. The city's population increased by a staggering 60% from 2010 to 2020. As they built new infrastructure to accommodate the influx of workers and businesses, they also realized that preservation was going to be key to their continued success. Today, Lehi uses a variety of tools in their pavement preservation toolbox, including HA5 High Density Mineral Bond, to extend the life of their streets. HA5 is designed to slow the oxidative aging of asphalt by working to block UV and moisture intrusion.
