I have been reflecting on the books I read in March for awhile uncertain how to summarize their impact. They have caused me to think much more frequently about my privilege in trusting in the rule of law. Both these books, "Just Mercy" by Bryan Stevenson and "Heretic" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, have moved me to support each of the authors in their charities: EJI and AHA (more information below). The following are quotes from each book that have echoed in my mind. I hope you read the books for yourself. “Proximity has taught me some basic and humbling truths, including this vital lesson: Each of us is more than the worst thing we’ve ever done. My work with the poor and the incarcerated has persuaded me that the opposite of poverty is not wealth; the opposite of poverty is justice. Finally, I’ve come to believe that the true measure of our commitment to justice, the character of our society, our commitment to the rule of law, fairness, and equality cannot be measured by how we treat the rich, the powerful, the privileged, and the respected among us. The true measure of our character is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned.” ― Bryan Stevenson, Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption “Hard as it may be for many Western academics to believe, when people commit violent acts in the name of religion, they are not trying somehow to dignify their underlying socioeconomic or political grievances.” ― Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is an organization working to end mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, to challenge racial and economic injustice, and to protect basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. For more information about EJI, check them out online at www.eji.org. AHA Foundation works to liberate women and girls from oppressive traditional practices that violate their human rights. You can get involved by reading AHA recommended books (I have finished four so far). https://lnkd.in/eVNXJ-gX (and you can join me in donating too). #BookRecommendation

History tells us that women have always been change-makers. Today is the anniversary of the Mud March – the first large-scale women’s procession through London,?organised by the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies to raise awareness of a private member’s bill calling for women’s suffrage. This LSE blog explains more about the march?https://bit.ly/4bvBY96 It's a fascinating event to celebrate and reminds us how crucial?women’s and girls’ organisations are –?and always have been – to the fabric of society. Crucial to us having good laws, good public policy, and good politics. They work tirelessly to tackle inequality, discrimination, and injustice. Every bit of progress in culture, law, policy, and practice in women’s and girls’ lives over the last 200 years has been pioneered by women and girls organising and mobilising. So much of what we take for granted now: equal pay legislation, support for women prisoners, domestic violence refuges, rape crisis helplines, reproductive support, childcare, maternity rights, pensions for part-time workers, or the simple right for women to have access to their own bank accounts – every single one of these has been fought for and sustained by the collective effort of women. Yet our sector is chronically under-funded. Just 1.8% of charitable funding goes to organisations run by women and girls for the benefit of women and girls. ?? This must change ?? Rosa is an expert funder of women’s and girls’ organisations. We understand the context in which women’s and girls’ organisations operate. We have expertise and robust due diligence processes that mean funding goes where it is most needed and it is well spent. We reach organisations many donors wouldn’t be able to fund directly without building up a significant grant-making infrastructure. Through a single donation to Rosa, donors can reach a wide range of organisations, issues and regions. Find out more about how you can support us to support women’s and girls’ organisations to keep making change that benefits all of us:?https://lnkd.in/esAetPnN #charityfundraising?#philanthropy?#womenandgirls?#charity

?? MARCH WITH US FOR ORANGE SHIRT DAY! ?? Do you have your orange shirt ready for September 30th, a symbol of our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation? *** On this day, it is crucial we reaffirm our commitment to Indigenous women and children and to their right to justice, equality, and security. Recent events remind us that systemic racism continues to pose significant challenges for Indigenous peoples across the country. *** Statistics clearly highlight the disproportionate risk of violence faced by Indigenous women in Canada and the unfortunate upward trend in these numbers – underscoring an immediate need for targeted interventions to address this ongoing crisis. Service System Navigator, Family Violence Lived Experience Consultant, Childhood Stroke Advocate, Board Director
First Nations women are 33 times more likely to be hospitalised as a result of family violence, which is predominantly perpetrated by cis gender white men. Understanding the barriers to help seeking and our own privilege and power while working in systems of oppression is critical in building culturally safe service delivery when preventing and responding to First Nations women experiencing violence. Ochre Ribbon week is an opportunity to continue learning from truth telling and to understand the devastating impacts of violence as well as recognising and celebrating the incredible work of First Nations organisations like DjirraVIC. We must also acknowledge the ongoing resilience and courage of First Nations people who continue to face discrimination, racism and oppression.
Today is the first day of Ochre Ribbon Week (12-19 Feb), an Aboriginal led, self-determined campaign to raise awareness of the devastating impacts of violence against Aboriginal women and children, and amplify our voices and experiences. Aboriginal women are 33x more likely to be hospitalised because of family violence and 11x more likely to die from a violent assault. This is a national crisis and our women deserve better. Over the next week and beyond, we ask you to advocate and stand with us by: ? Calling on Governments to invest in our longstanding vision of?regional expansion?of our services, and of the establishment of an?Aboriginal Women’s Centre. This Centre will provide the self-determined nucleus for all Djirra’s regional services and be a place of cultural strength and celebration that will ground and sustain our work across the entire state. ? Demanding that Aboriginal mums have access to our culturally safe, legal and non-legal support, so they can escape violence safely with their children. Djirra is urgently calling on the Victorian Government to partner with Djirra and other specialist ACCOs to design and implement a system of early, independent legal and non-legal help for Aboriginal mums where there are concerns about child protection. Early access to Djirra’s legal and specialist services will prevent Aboriginal children being taken from their mums and families. ? Elevating Djirra’s voice and visibility so that we can amplify the voices and experiences of Aboriginal women. ? Support Djirra to support Aboriginal women by donating via the GiveNow link in our bio. Aboriginal women's lives matter ?????? #OchreRibbon2024 #OchreRibbonWeek2024 #DontSilenceTheViolence
