ONS release report on A & E waiting times. No surprise for anyone who has recently visited or had family visit A & E waiting times have gone up! However, What is shocking is in June 2013 4.6% of waiting times were over the National KPi of 5 hours where 95% target rates were expected. In December 2022 following a reduced target rate of 75% and then return to 95%, 50.4% of the population waited more than 5 hours with average wait times are 12 hours from booking in to assessment/discharge/admission. I don’t like to get on my soap box much, but why are we surprised by these figures? and, what are we going to do about it? My days of working in assessment units and front door admission avoidance services saw us running around when we knew someone was going to 'breach' in fact, the word 'breach' was a trigger for all front door teams to assess, review, plan interventions, deliver, discharge, as quickly as possible! I myself saw my little girl admitted to a paediatric ward following me taking her to A & E with D&V which had lasted more than 4 days. I waited with her in A&E until 4 hours 45 mins on a trolley with a curtain around us waiting to see a paediatric consultant. Then, she was admitted, cannular inserted, fluids flowing, and observations taken, kept in overnight and discharged the next day. All she needed was nursing care, not a consultant to decide she needed nursing care. I worry about the vulnerable in our society, the very frail and the very young waiting in A & E for a least 12 hours and the risks of rapid deterioration. These figures do not include ambulance waiting times... can you image being in an ambulance or in a corridor having been dropped off by an ambulance for hours and hours? I’m not a politician but, it’s not rocket science is it?.... Invest in social care, reablement and admission avoidance community services which will release beds, which will bring down wait times to ensure safe, effective, responsive care. Invest in health and social care pay, at all levels to help them make ends meet and retain well trained staff which will ensure staffing levels are safe, effective, responsive and have the time to care. Stop closing walk in centres so we can 'get checked out' have medications we need out of hours, by prescribing nurses with signposting to A & E if needed. Bevans model of healthcare access from 1948 needs a complete review! it no longer works as a business model. Commission community, respite and care services at a rate which enables providers to offer quality person centered care and support which is safe, effective, responsive and teams have time to care, I am seeing a return to 15 mins 'pop in' calls. This is just not long enough to treat people with dignity and respect, offering choice and meeting preferences. The #CQC Single Assessment Framework will be looking at transitions between services as a quality statement for all services, it will be interesting to view their findings. Rant over.

Today, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care visited RCN HQ to hear our members' concerns. They raised a series of issues they wanted to see action on, including: - Whether the government has plans to waive tuition fees for nursing students. - What steps the government will take to address disparity in pay and conditions between NHS nursing staff and those working in community settings. - How the government can ensure the voice of nursing is valued as much as other medical professionals. - What the government will do to ensure nursing staff recruited from overseas are not exploited. Kindness in Healthcare: A Reflection on a Difficult Day ??We often hear about the sacrifices nurses make—being the heart of the hospital??, overworked, underpaid, and constantly stretched thin??. But rarely do we talk about the emotional toll—the moments when #nurses are insulted, humiliated, or even harassed while just trying to do their job. ??Recently, I experienced this firsthand. It was the start of a 12-hour shift. Just 10 minutes in, during a morning ward round, a group of #doctors had concerns about one of my patients. A diagnostic test hadn’t been done, and I couldn’t immediately explain why without checking with the previous nurse. ??This enraged the team leading to some of the doctors shouting at me while others voiced their disappointment loudly and one even called out the nursing manager criticizing the entire nursing team as "incompetent." This all happened in the hallway—public, chaotic, and with everyone watching. I was surrounded, spoken to but not heard, and felt utterly vulnerable. It wasn’t communication; it was an attack. ??This happened in my first hour of a 12-hour shift. How do you continue to care for your #patients when you feel diminished, when your voice has been silenced in front of peers and patients alike? How do we expect nurses to carry the emotional burden of such treatment and still deliver the #compassionate care we’re known for? What I’ve learned: 1. I will do better??, not just in my role, but in growing from this experience. I’ll strive to turn this pain into personal and professional growth. 2. Criticism, when constructive, leads to better outcomes for everyone. But the way we communicate matters. Healthcare is stressful for all involved, but #respect should never be compromised. 3. Humility and empathy are essential in #healthcareleadership. If I ever find myself in a position of authority, I will use it to uplift, guide, and stand up for those who are still learning. ??As my mother always says, "There are only two types of people in this world—not based on race, wealth, or religion, but on how they treat others: good people and bad people." I choose to be the former, always striving to lead with kindness. Small gestures of kindness go a long way, and the absence of it can be equally powerful.

?? Embracing Change in New Zealand's Age Care Sector! ?? As the demographics shift and our population ages, the role of nursing in New Zealand's age care sector becomes increasingly vital. ???????? In recent years, we've witnessed a significant evolution in the provision of care for our elderly population. With advancements in healthcare, longer life expectancy, and changing societal structures, the demand for high-quality, compassionate nursing care has never been greater. Nurses are the heartbeat of aged care facilities, providing not just medical assistance, but also emotional support, companionship, and a sense of dignity to our seniors. Their dedication and expertise play a pivotal role in ensuring the well-being and comfort of our aging loved ones. Moreover, as the complexity of healthcare needs among the elderly increases, so does the demand for skilled nursing professionals. From managing chronic conditions to administering specialized treatments, nurses are at the forefront of delivering comprehensive care tailored to individual needs. In this rapidly evolving landscape, it's crucial to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions of nurses in the age care sector. By investing in their training, professional development, and well-being, we not only enhance the quality of care provided but also create a more fulfilling and rewarding environment for both caregivers and recipients alike. Let's celebrate the dedication, compassion, and expertise of nurses in New Zealand's age care sector, and commit to supporting their continued growth and success. Together, we can ensure that our elderly population receives the exceptional care and attention they deserve. ?? #AgeCare #NursingExcellence #NewZealandHealthcare

Digital Edition: Nursing Times June 2024 Incidents of racism against NHS staff are increasing, a major investigation by Nursing Times has revealed. We have analysed data provided by 137 trusts. A total of 8,835 incidents of racism were reported in 2023, representing an 18% increase since 2022 and a 105% increase since 2019. Individual nurses and their teams are, however, doing invaluable work to boost equality, diversity and inclusion in many parts of the country. In this month’s Nursing Times, our sixth annual edition dedicated to equality, diversity and inclusion, we are highlighting some examples, including two of our award winners and a nurse working to make palliative care more equitable. We also have articles on nurses supporting international staff to stay and thrive, helping understand faith-based issues for Muslim families after suicide, and boosting healthcare engagement for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities. In addition, with the general election coming on 4 July, we are publishing the final chapter in our Manifesto by Nurses, focusing this month on your views about mental health policy. #nurse #nurses #nursing #health #healthcare #equality #equity #diversity #inclusion #racism https://lnkd.in/eaTQzhqt
