???? Veterans Day: Ever wondered about its true origins? ???? It all began at the end of World War I. Known then as “The Great War,” it officially concluded with the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. The real end of hostilities came earlier. An armistice took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month—November 11, 1918. This marked the end of “the war to end all wars.” Since then, November 11 has been dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. ??? But how do you truly honor them? Reach Out to a Veteran → A simple call or message can mean the world. Ask them about their experiences, and listen. ?? Attend a Veterans Day Event → Be part of a community that appreciates their service. It’s not just a ceremony, it’s a shared moment of gratitude. Volunteer at a Veterans' Organization → Many organizations need support. Whether it’s your time or resources, it matters. ?? Educate Yourself and Others → Learn about military history. Share stories of sacrifice and bravery. ?? Support Veteran Owned Businesses → Choose to spend your dollar where it counts. It’s a direct way to say 'thank you'. Veterans Day is more than a date on the calendar. It’s about recognizing the sacrifices made for our freedoms. On Veterans Day, we reflect on a profound truth: service comes in many forms, but military service stands apart. They say a Veteran is someone who once handed their country a blank check, payable with their very life. This isn't just a powerful metaphor - it's the reality of military service. Every man and woman who puts on the uniform makes this extraordinary commitment, whether serving four years or thirty, in times of peace or war. What makes this service unique? It's the absolute nature of their commitment. Veterans don't choose their assignments or set their terms. They go where needed, serve who needs them, and sacrifice without question. They put aside careers, leave families behind, and suspend personal dreams for a greater purpose. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13) While we call them heroes, many Veterans humbly point to their fallen comrades as the true heroes - those who paid the ultimate price. Yet today, we honor all who served, because each one embodied the same spirit of selfless dedication. You give up weekends, holidays, and sometimes much more to ensure others are safe. ?? Endurance Good times, tough times, every time. Serving means showing up day after day, rain or shine, no matter the challenges. That mile and a half isn't going to run itself ?? ??? Resilience Military life shapes resilience like no other experience. It’s knowing how to adapt, push through, and get stronger from each trial. ?? Valor Courage is a daily habit. From physical bravery in theater to everyday moral courage, service is about standing for what’s right—even when it’s hard. ?? Empathy Service reminds you that everyone has a story. Whether it’s with fellow soldiers or those we protect, understanding and compassion are essential to what we do. Reflections on Remembrance Day I understand that the United States observes Veterans Day on November 11, focusing on honoring all military veterans, both living and deceased. However, in Canada, Remembrance Day centers on commemorating those who have died in military service. Remembrance Day is more than just a holiday; it’s a solemn tribute to those who served, fought, and, for many, gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live in peace and freedom. Today, on November 11, at exactly 11:00 a.m., we pause in silence for two minutes to remember and honor the countless men and women who have dedicated their lives to the values that we cherish. During the Remembrance Day ceremony, I noticed a relatively young Armed Forces member crying uncontrollably. I felt a tug at my heart. My thoughts? Either he was grappling with the weight of an unknown future—wondering what sacrifices might lie ahead if he hadn’t fully contemplated the depth of his life choice—or he was simply overcome with sadness for the lives lost in battle. In that moment, I saw the human side of service. Veterans are remembered not just for their courage but for their discipline and quiet strength, even when the path is uncertain. But it’s important to remember that some servicemen and women face unseen battles. Many struggle with the scars of their service, suffering from conditions like PTSD. For some, these battles are lifelong, and not all come out the other side the same. Today, I honor my roots as a product of a veteran—a legacy of discipline and resilience that taught us all that strength is found in service. These values are passed down, shaping us in ways we can never fully put into words. In honor of those who served and fell, we remember. Where did the last 12 months go? It is always great to return to your roots and catch up with old friends and colleagues to chat like no time has passed. The annual Army Photographic Seminar is always a good night out. There are a few reasons why the Veteran Network is known for its resilience and strength, and one of them is our shared experiences. We have gone through similar experiences during our military service, including training, deployments, and the unique demands of military life. This collective journey and the stories we share have created a strong sense of family and understanding among veterans. We all share common values such as integrity, discipline, teamwork, and dedication to service. Together, we function as a support system for veterans, offering a network of individuals who can relate to their experiences and provide invaluable support in navigating post-military life, including understanding, empathy, and guidance. The bonds we have formed during military service are lifelong, these connections transcend geographical boundaries and endure long after active service has ended. In summary, the Veteran Network is strong because it is built on shared experiences, common values, mutual support, lifelong connections, and continued engagement. ???? Honoring Veterans Day with Purpose and Legacy This weekend, we honor the service members among us and pay respect to their sacrifices. As a Marine veteran, a husband, and a father, Veterans Day holds a unique meaning for me. When I first left the Marines in 2007, I didn’t want to be recognized as a veteran. To many of us, service isn’t a badge of honor—it’s just a part of our past. Yet, no matter how far behind us it seems, the questions remain: Did it matter? And why? For me, service mattered because it strengthened us to live better, fuller lives—to become better parents, partners, and human beings. Veterans carry a complex toolbox of experiences, each one shaping us in ways we may not yet fully understand. Many veterans come home but, in some ways, never truly feel home. Instead of “thank you for your service,” consider saying, “Welcome home.” Those words might be the first step in their journey back to their family, and back to themselves. For me, being a veteran is about using the tools my service gave me to build a life worthy of those who didn’t make it back. It’s about creating a legacy, a family so strong it makes its own mark. As Steve Jobs said, “We are here to put a dent in the universe.” My hope is that, someday, people will see that dent and know it was left by the Killoy's. On this Veterans Day, I challenge you to see veterans as an inspiration for the life and legacy you want to create—a life filled with adventure, depth, community, and family.
