Science has lost its way, and it’s been a story decades in the making. The COVID-19 pandemic brought this detour into sharp focus, accelerating the credibility gap and contributing to a rising loss of public trust in science.?Liberty-oriented donors have been tempted to retreat from giving in the areas of medicine and science, but wise philanthropists have a key role to play in bringing truth back to science.

Women’s stories are important. This Women’s History Month, I wanted to showcase how women in Iowa have made an impact, past, present and future. From raising awareness on eating disorders and endometriosis, to gathering donations to end period poverty, stories on women’s health were a priority. Women’s bodies are not gross and continuing to talk about much-needed improvements in healthcare is a step toward wider improvement. A brilliant researcher at Iowa State University and a bright young leader at the University of Iowa are making strides in their respective fields, studying turtles to discover biomedical impacts and pushing for drink-covers and campus safety. The foundations of so many industries are built on university campuses, and it was my honor to share their work. Finally, there are so many women in Iowa who left national marks on social justice, advocacy, and in their industries. Learning about their stories and the profound impacts of their work in Iowa and across the country was so engaging. We can learn so much from our past to shape our present and future. Women’s stories are valuable and worthy of coverage, and not just in March, but all the time. It is my privilege to be just a tiny piece in ensuring these women’s remarkable work is known. https://lnkd.in/g6Q4ZUza #womenshistory #storytelling

I have really got a lot out of attending ResilienceCon over the past couple of years. The refreshing "unconference" format with shorter talks, interactive workshops, and interview-based sessions, and plenty of networking time has been really useful for me to develop my networks and be part of a community that is focused on the science of healing. It has really changed my perspectives on the way we approach the study of adjustment after adversity, and I have even adapted their conference format for our own research seminar series! ResilienceCon provides a refreshing space where we not only discuss trauma and its negative consequences, but also emphasise the importance of identifying and supporting individual, family, community, and environmental strengths to overcome and prevent trauma. The conference takes place in Nashville, TN, from 6-8 April 2025, with a meeting of the Resilience Portfolio Consortium taking place on 9 April, where we discuss and collaborate to advance our understanding of resilience with international colleagues. See the call for submissions (general deadline is 21 October) and more details about the conference here: https://lnkd.in/e3CXBNFR Submission portal is here: https://lnkd.in/eh8y6DHV Examples of our recent work include this paper on strengths that contribute to subjective wellbeing and posttraumatic growth following multiple forms of victimisation: https://lnkd.in/eySPtAgF

As a learning organization, the William T. Grant Foundation strives to reflect on our programs as they unfold. Our goal as a grantmaker is not merely to fund high-quality research studies, but to shape the environment for research and its relationship to policy and practice. The Institutional Challenge Grant is central to this strategy because it brings together our focus on reducing inequality in youth outcomes with insights drawn from research we have supported on improving the use of research evidence. https://lnkd.in/eTvHhsqT

In-person and online registration is open for the October 29 Philanthropy Research Workshop featuring Eric John Abrahamson at 12:00 ET. University Hall, 3rd Floor 301 University Blvd. Indianapolis, IN 46202 Room: Room 3011 Abstract: Philanthropy plays a significant role in discovery science and the innovation system in the United States, but its contributions are poorly understood. Scholars who study the history of science tend to neglect the role of funders in promoting and shaping lines of research and emerging fields. Researchers interested in innovation focus on the interrelationships between business, government, and higher education and frequently ignore the role of private donors. In this paper and presentation, I show how the co-evolution of institutions in finance, higher education, and government over the last forty years have sparked a new wave of philanthropy in basic science that is closely aligned with the growth of private capital markets in the U.S. Focusing on the San Francisco Bay Area, Cambridge/Boston, and San Diego, I show how this new philanthropy plays a critical role in the innovation system, promoting economic growth and consumer welfare through the development of new drugs and treatments in health care and technology. It also contributes to growing income inequality and concentrates influence in science policy in the hands of a new class of Second Gilded Age tech billionaires. https://lnkd.in/dJQx8WUk
