I wrote two articles for Town & Country's November Philanthropy issue: One is on the aftermath of last year's higher ed "donors' revolt." The other is on how Warren Buffett's decision to direct what's left of his fortune after his death to a charitable trust to be administered by his three children (and not to the Gates Foundation) represents a very different model of philanthropic values, one linked to pluralism, than the one that led him to hand over much of his wealth to Gates during his life. We always talk about what Hesed House could do with big bet funding commitments. When we talk about ambition and innovation in social change rather than high risk, we put the focus on what we want rather than fear of failure. Innovation can’t happen in fear based, restrictive funding environments.

The Great Wealth Transfer is underway, and we’re seeing that in action with the news that the next generation of Buffetts are set to become major players in philanthropy, when their 94-year-old father, Warren Buffett, eventually passes away. Buffett announced his $144 billion fortune will go to a charitable trust to be managed by his three children. The next generation of Buffetts will then have 10 years to give the money away. This shift could have a profound impact on nonprofits, especially in areas like environmental restoration, where urgent and scalable action is needed. Large-scale philanthropic efforts like these have the potential to drive critical investments in sustainability and climate action. While the primary focus of these donations may vary, it highlights the importance of collaborative efforts between large funders and grassroots organizations working on the ground. The Buffett family's interest in lean and efficient organizations (Howard Buffett's foundation employs 10 people and distributed $458.1 million last year) could align well with the efficient and strategic work of smaller nonprofits. When the next generation of Buffetts takes on this philanthropic role, their focus on efficiency and measurable impact presents a unique opportunity for growing nonprofits like Great River Greening to scale up, driving lasting environmental and community resilience. https://lnkd.in/gQ3dACQZ

Philanthropic gifts should fund the actual work a non-profit is engaged in, not just support capacity and turn the staff into fundraising matching funds development officers. Big bet donations could benefit from pairing non-profis with high capacity private companies who are already proficient st addressing a certain challenge. The non-profit funds could really help scale the solutions.

Boldly Go Philanthropy is pleased to share that Boldly Go Co-Founders and Managing Partners Jeff Kutash and Kyle Peterson facilitated two workshops at the Goldman Sachs Philanthropy Forum last month in New York City. The sessions focused on helping aspiring and experienced philanthropists set a strategy and approach for their giving. Whether they were just getting started or had been giving for years, attendees all faced challenges and choices in their philanthropy ranging from not knowing how to get started or fear of making mistakes to figuring out how to engage new generations or set a strategy and measure impact. Our sessions centered on overcoming these barriers and setting a course for their future philanthropy by using the Boldly go "Philanthropic Compass" - a framework and tool we developed to help our clients ensure that their philanthropy is leading to impact and joy. After all, if you don't know which direction you are headed, you will likely never arrive at your intended destination. A finely tuned compass is grounded in values and sets vision and direction. It provides clarity on how to structure effective grants and impact investments, create cohesive grantmaking portfolios, build relationships with grantees, and launch philanthropic initiatives. And it identifies what philanthropic approaches, roles, and structures will lead to successful outcomes. To see an example of a philanthropic compass, visit our blog:?https://zurl.co/fVQ5 #BoldlyGoChangemakers #PhilanthropyInAction #BoldNotes
