I want to share this petition, primarily for the Valparaiso University alums in the network, but also for anyone who’s benefitted from language learning or study abroad. In short, my Alma Mater is planning to cut all language programs as majors from the curriculum as budget cuts. I stand staunchly against this decision. Higher education experiences (particularly in the USA) are designed holistically, to impact all aspects of students’ professional development towards entering both the workforce and civil society. Similarly, language acquisition is not merely the transferral of knowledge, but the making of an identity. And how is this identity made? By introducing the possibility of entering new worlds of culture, literature, and most importantly - dialogue across nations and borders. Language learning inspires a curiosity to encounter and know the “other”. When you take away this opportunity, you quench a would-be light. I would not be in my current position without the education and opportunities afforded to me by Valparaiso University and in particular its German department. As an international educator, I hope that the administrative staff will reconsider this decision. My article “Interculturality Through Non-Adapted Literary Works In Non-Bilingual Secondary Education Classes: Utopia Or Reality In Spain” has been published as a chapter of the book “ámbitos y perspectivas actuales en lingüística y literatura” (ISBN 978-84-1369-615-7) by Editorial Comares. ?????? This achievement is a real milestone in my career as a young researcher. Based on two English text books I designed in 2022 (published thanks to the Autonomous University of Madrid), inside its pages I theorise about interculturality, bilingualism and how to bring diversity into EFL classrooms through original works for students who are at times overlooked in the school curricula. HOW TO USE POR AND PARA IN SPANISH Differences between por and para in Spanish. This is one of the nightmares for our students on Spanishviaskype.com. This is not surprising, because they start studying these differences at the basic levels and they continue until the end of times. The most common meaning of these prepositions are the cause and the purpose. “Por” introduces the reason, the cause for the main verb (Estudié Medicina por mi padre. So, my father was the reason for me to study Medicine). On the other hand, “para” introduces a goal, a purpose (Estudié Medicina para mi padre. Maybe my father is ill and I studied in order to heal him). Por versus para in Spanish. Deciding which preposition to use in a given context depends on what you are trying to say. Perhaps the most direct path to understanding how to interpret and use these prepositions in Spanish effectively is through examining a list of the separate functions of each preposition. I had a great time reflecting on my experience as an Italian major while I wrote this piece. As my graduation date gets closer and closer it is a bitter-sweet feeling knowing that this chapter of my life is coming to a close. Latin is booming at some state schools, supplanting modern languages and capturing a new generation of classicists. Now an academy trust has made it the main language at more than 20 of its primaries, with weekly lessons for seven to eleven-year-olds — so that it is not just the preserve of the wealthy. It is thought to be the biggest single uptake of Latin for younger children. In total, almost 400 primary schools in England are estimated to be teaching the not-so-dead language

We need Indigenous leadership
