Team is so important. One day off the Kerry coast when my world, my ability to keep moving was falling down around me, the command boat said over the VHF "Remember when you feel you can't swim anymore, there is a team behind you pulling your arm with you, you are not alone" It is so important to see how much the team is part of the individual's success. In our swims over the years, the moments I loved the most, were finding the sweet spot of trust necessary to let go of the control and commit to my role of just swimming, not to worry if they are watching me, if they can get to me, if they can see me, if they can identify the risk. I have seen so many risky team members over the years and their failings and how it impacted outcomes. Operating in remote and extreme conditions, a swimmer cannot always see, hear or speak-the team need to be aware to this-to be able to identify the risks Often in environments of life, ice water swimming 1000m @ 0deg, remote ocean and water locations, the team is the bridge between survival and a negative outcome. We are the sum of the teams. #teammatters It's not uncommon when a swimmer finishes a swim in cold or ice -they cannot dress themselves, they cannot move or manage themselves and if the teams were not present, or a team did not understand their role, the swimmer would not have a positive outcome. Team like in life is the difference not only between success and failure- but can be the difference between keeping life afloat, clearing the clutter of our minds and keeping ideas moving, ensuring the common objective is the focus. It is important that we keep ourselves aware of our own needs around us, who is best suits, how best we be suited and how we can all work together to grow to be great teammembers.
