Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for celebration and recognizing history, but it also brings to light the nuanced and sometimes complicated question of identity within the community. Terms like “Hispanic” and “Latino” are often used interchangeably, but they carry different connotations. “Hispanic” generally refers to people with origins in Spanish-speaking countries, whereas “Latino” encompasses individuals from Latin America, including those from non-Spanish-speaking countries like Brazil. Exploring the different race, ethnicity and origin categories used by people in the U.S. begins with the U.S. census and how people are counted. From the first count in 1790, the category names have changed based on the reflection of current politics, science and public attitudes, according to findings from the Pew Research Center.

Our latest report discusses the importance of collecting reliable and nuanced race and ethnicity data in the U.S., especially for Black Latinos. We argue that considering the U.S. Latino population is growing in number and diversity, the federal government should prioritize understanding the many ways that this group identifies through rigorous data collection. Critical to understanding the Latino population is recognizing that Latinidad is an ethnicity, not a race, and that Latinos are racialized differently based on their physical appearance. This is an especially timely conversation given recently announced changes to the U.S. Census questions on race and ethnicity that directly impact Latinos. Throughout the report, we argue that collecting data about street race, or the race that a stranger would assume you to be based on your physical appearance, could provide the U.S. government with a more accurate understanding of how its population is racialized. This is not longer a marketing preference. Marketing to Latinos is a business decision. Is Your Brand Ready for the 2030 Census? Of Americans who are 18 years of age or younger, about 53% come from ethnically or culturally diverse backgrounds. Furthermore, the majority of people living in the majority-minority states of California, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, Maryland, and Hawaii as well as the District of Columbia are members of different demographic groups. These states and the District of Columbia are known as minority-majority states. I've just concluded viewing a thought-provoking video delving into the three Cities in America with the highest percentage of African Americans. Interesting enough, I've had and have the honor of leading economic development organizations in two of the top three cities on the list (South Fulton, GA and now Jackson, MS). I've intimately encountered the challenges inherent to these communities but more importantly the boundless opportunities and potential each possess. One crucial aspect I consistently emphasize is the pivotal role of leadership in driving success within any organization or community. Regardless of the abundance of financial resources and earnest aspirations, the absence of effective leadership inevitably impedes progress and undermines potential achievements. NOTE: The list displays each city (or city-equivalent) in the fifty states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico with a population over 100,000 and a Black proportion over 30% as of the 2020 Census. It includes the city's total population, the number of Black people in the city, and the percentage of people in the city who are Black as of the 2020 Census. #EconomicDevelopment #LeadershipExcellence #LimitlessPossibilities #LeadershipMatters The data source for the list is the 2020 United States Census.

Back by popular demand!? ? The map below illustrates changes in the Hispanic population share by county for the periods ending in 2009 and 2022. This version focuses on the Southeast, in contrast to the previous post which covered the Midwest and Northeast. ? Florida, with its long-standing appeal to Hispanic communities, continues to show strong growth, particularly in central Florida. Notably, Osceola County, south of Orlando, and extending through South Florida into Broward County and Miami-Dade County, exhibit significant increases in Hispanic residents. In contrast, Florida's Panhandle shows little to no growth. ? Other areas witnessing substantial growth in Hispanic populations are characterized by growing employment prospects and affordable housing. Key growth engines in the South include North Carolina's Research Triangle and Atlanta. Interestingly, while the core areas of these regions show little to no increase in Hispanic population, probably due to high housing prices, surrounding counties experience rapid growth. ? The South Appalachia region, which includes parts of North Carolina, East Tennessee, and northern parts of Georgia and Alabama, is also seeing a significant rise in its Hispanic population. ? Arkansas displays moderate growth, primarily in its northwest corner, around the economically vibrant Bentonville, home to Walmart's headquarters. ? Conversely, most counties in Alabama, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee exhibit weak growth in their Hispanic populations. Thanks to Mark Arshavsky for helping prepare this post! #south #labormarkets #hispanic #population #demographics #recruitment

What's happening: The Biden administration has introduced new race and ethnicity standards for the census, marking a significant change in how individuals identify themselves. For the first time, Hispanic or Latino is listed as a single race/ethnicity category, streamlining the process for millions who previously had to navigate a two-part question. Similarly, people of Middle Eastern or North African descent will now have their own checkbox, sparing them from having to choose "white" or "other." These updates, effective immediately, aim to accurately reflect the evolving multicultural identity of the United States. The changes come after extensive research and public consultation, signaling a commitment to improving data accuracy and inclusivity. While the revisions primarily impact federal agencies, they have broader implications for research, governance, and societal perspectives. The move is lauded as a critical step forward, yet concerns persist about potential limitations and the need for ongoing research to capture diverse identities comprehensively. https://brnw.ch/21wItG9 #LatinoBuzz

For the first time, #Hispanic or #Latino is listed as one race/ethnicity category and people of Middle Eastern or North African descent will have their own checkbox under?new race and ethnicity standards?adopted by the Biden administration. The changes were effective Thursday, and agencies have 18 months to devise plans for complying and then up to five years to put those plans in place, though some are likely to do so sooner, the OMB said. The newest standards reflect results from the 2020 #census that showed that most Hispanics did not identify their race as white, Black or Asian and instead were?more likely?to choose "some other race" on the decennial survey or to check "two or more races." https://lnkd.in/e-HFy8vf

Black residents are leading a momentum of change through a continuing legacy of civic engagement in the Inland Empire. Over the next few posts I want to take some space to highlight points of points of praise and concern in our modern legacy of civic engagement. One crucial tool for all communities who are lobbying for their cut of funding is the Census. Without accurate counts, the Black population will remain underserved on a federal and statistical level. In the Inland Empire, the Black community's involvement in the Census is a notable highlight in terms of change over time. With each passing Census, our participation improves. In the 2020 Census, the Black participation rate surpassed that of White and Latino populations while closely rivalling that of Asian groups. This is a significant achievement and a testament to the Black community's commitment to ensuring the diversity of their communities is accurately reflected. Let's continue to use the Census as a tool to ensure that our community's needs are recorded and that we receive our fair share of funding. #CivicEngagement #InlandEmpire #BlackCommunity #2020Census #AmericanCommunitySurvey

White supremacy, with a tan Analysis by?John Blake, CNN ?13 minute read? Updated 8:07 AM EDT, Sat September 4, 2021 CNN?—? Cutting taxes for the rich helps the poor. There is no such thing as a Republican or a Democratic judge. Climate change is a hoax. Some political myths refuse to die despite all evidence the contrary. Here’s another: When White people are no longer a majority, racism will fade and the US “will never be a White country again.” This myth was reinforced recently when the US Census’ 2020 report revealed that people who identify as White alone declined?for the first time?since the Census began in 1790. The majority of Americans under 18 are now people of color, and people who identity as multiracial?increased?by 276% over the last decade. New census figures show America is more diverse and multiracial than ever These Census figures seemed to validate a common assumption: The US is barreling toward becoming a rainbow nation around 2045, when White people are?projected?to become a minority. That year has been depicted as “a countdown to the White apocalypse,” and “dreadful”?news for White supremacists.”?Two commentators even predicted?the US “White majority will soon disappear forever.” It’s now taken as a given that the “Browning of America”?will lead to the erosion of White supremacy.
