Respondents indicated that their experiences with VA prosthetic care were slower and less responsive than the care provided by the DoD. Matt’s story demonstrates the ongoing struggle so many Veteran amputees suffer through. Even after eventually receiving the proper prosthetic, ongoing treatment?proved?to be another challenge. ????Veteran's Day: Honoring Our Elderly Veterans BETTER???? November 11th is a great day- Social media is unified once again (counter to the typical divide) as we express our gratitude for those who fought for our beautiful country. It's refreshing to see a spark of unanimous patriotism, I must admit. Being in the long-term care industry, today obviously raises the question "How can we honor veterans currently living in our nursing homes?" I thought long & hard about what would make our veterans feel truly seen and appreciated, beyond a thank you & a special meal. Here are my thoughts: ???Give veterans the opportunity today to tell their "hero story" with no interruptions. The memories they hold and the life experiences they have are unimaginably significant. Allow them to feel that strength and bravery again. ???Allow staff the time to ask questions and be genuinely curious about the veteran experience. Veterans have so much wisdom and history they're anxious to tell younger generations. ???And MOST importantly: Continue to show respect for our veterans tomorrow, Wednesday, and every day after that. Quality care and genuine compassion are not "holiday treats," they're basic human rights. Showing a veteran consistent interest about their valuable life all year long is better than a November 11th dinner buffet.
