Goals vs. Creating Systems: Lessons from Atomic Habits These days, I’m working on building a consistent reading habit—not just reading quick articles, but diving into actual books with depth and insight. And what better choice to start with than Atomic Habits by James Clear? If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that I love taking lessons from my personal life and applying them to my professional growth—and vice versa. So, as I read, I’m constantly asking: How can the principles in Atomic Habits improve my work and help drive meaningful, long-term success? Why Systems Are Transformative: In Atomic Habits, Clear makes a crucial point: Goals are temporary, but systems create lasting change. Goals give us a destination, but systems provide the roadmap. With the right system, each small habit or action becomes a stepping stone toward continuous improvement. This mindset can also apply to process management in tools like Signavio: 1. Goals Are the Destination; Systems Are the Roadmap ??? Signavio’s process management framework helps design workflows that go beyond single goals to create efficient, repeatable processes. This mirrors Clear’s insight that systems lead to continuous progress even after reaching one milestone. 2. Building Identity-Based Habits ?? Just as Clear talks about identity-based habits, Signavio supports a culture of continuous improvement. Structured workflows create a system that reinforces values like quality and agility, establishing a strong identity of ongoing growth. 3. Consistency in Systems Drives Continuous Improvement ?? In Signavio, process management isn't about one-time fixes but about small, ongoing adjustments that lead to excellence. Systems keep teams moving forward, fostering innovation and growth even after achieving specific goals. Personal Example: When I wanted to improve my reading habit, I didn’t just set a goal to read more. I created a system—dedicating time each day, focusing on relevant books, and applying what I learned. This approach doesn’t just meet one goal; it builds a habit of continuous learning. Similarly, in my professional life, I implement systems in process management to drive consistent improvement, ensuring each success becomes part of a larger journey. ?? What about you? How do you apply systems vs. goals in your professional or personal life? #AtomicHabits #ProfessionalGrowth #ProcessManagement #Signavio #ContinuousImprovement #GoalsVsSystems #Leadership #LinkedInCommunity

? The Goals Grid?? ? Do you want laser guidance on developing personal objectives?? ? Or maybe a corporate strategy?? ? Or a project Pre-Mortem??All are possible with the Goals Grid.? ? ????What is it?? ? The Goals Grid is a 4-box model for setting and classifying goals and objectives at both the individual and organisation level – and everything in between – with a desired outcome:? ? Achieve:?zero in on what you want (and don’t have now) i.e. a new customer segment, a new skill? ? Preserve:?lock in your advantages i.e. intellectual property, key relationships? ? Avoid:?steer clear and navigate around i.e. crowded markets, conflicts? ? Eliminate: remove or eradicate what is holding you back i.e. waste, inefficiencies, people, processes, technology (this one could be fun…?!)? ? ????How to use it? ? Ask yourself or team specific contextual questions that open-up the discussion i.e. if we develop a new product what can we achieve / protect / avoid / eliminate??? ? Experiment with your questions to see if more options and outcomes are revealed and explored? ? Populate each quadrant in the grid with your answers / findings – create your action plan? ? ????Watch out for? ? Is there balance? Is your Goals Grid balanced or one-sided or too concentrated in 1 quadrant? E.g. you are avoiding not eliminating? ? What’s missing??For example does your Goals Grid only talk to creating shareholder value, with no mention of customers, employees or the environment?? ? ????Try? ? Swap goals and objectives for OKRs? ? Revisit regular to track progress and pivot if required #agilecoaching?#scrummaster?#visualcommunication

?? Implementing a New Process: A Recipe for Success ?? Rolling out a new process can feel like steering a ship through uncharted waters. But with the right approach, you’ll navigate the change with confidence. Here’s a simple framework to implement a new process effectively: 1?? Communicate the Why: Explain the purpose and benefits to your team. When people understand the "why," they’re more likely to embrace the "how." 2?? Start Small: Pilot the process with a smaller group to refine it before scaling. 3?? Train and Equip: Provide the tools and knowledge your team needs to succeed. 4?? Monitor and Adjust: Gather feedback, track outcomes, and refine as necessary. ?? Pro tip: Involve your team in designing the process! When they feel ownership, they’ll champion the change and make it stick. Processes don’t have to be rigid - they’re dynamic tools that grow with your team. Systems Thinking: Insights from 'The Phoenix Project' ?? Last week, I immersed myself in the book 'The Phoenix Project' and uncovered valuable insights into one of the core concepts "Systems Thinking" - one of "The Three Ways" introduced by Erik, the mentor character in the book. The book emphasizes systems thinking as a critical approach for improving IT operations and overall organizational performance. Here are some key takeaways : ?? Focus on the Entire System, Not Just Individual Tasks: It’s common to focus on optimizing individual tasks or team performance, but the real impact comes when we zoom out and look at how everything connects. Systems thinking urges us to move beyond silos and view our efforts in the context of the entire organization. The goal isn’t just to improve one part of the process, but to enhance the system as a whole, ensuring that every improvement drives value and efficiency across the board. ?? End-to-End Flow is Crucial From development to operations to customer delivery—each handoff can accelerate or hinder progress. By streamlining this flow and eliminating bottlenecks, we ensure value reaches customers faster and with fewer errors. ?? Avoid Local Optimizations Improving one part of the process in isolation can sometimes create unforeseen issues elsewhere. Systems thinking reminds us to consider the ripple effects of our changes and focus on improvements that benefit the entire system. ?? Identify and Fix Constraints A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. If one team member or department is overwhelmed (like Brent in The Phoenix Project), the entire organization suffers. Identifying and addressing bottlenecks ensures smoother operations and faster delivery. ??? Continuous Feedback Loops Faster feedback accelerates improvement. By integrating continuous testing and iteration into our processes, we can identify and address issues early, avoiding costly fixes down the line. ?? IT and Business Should Move in Tandem Systems thinking helps us recognize that IT isn't just a support function; it's integral to business success. Aligning IT and business goals allows teams to work synchronously, driving innovation, efficiency, and meaningful results for the entire organization. What's your experience with systems thinking in your organization? Have you read The Phoenix Project? ?? What If Everything We Know About Improvement Is… Backwards? Let’s flip the script on continuous improvement! Instead of focusing on fixing problems, let’s explore what’s already working exceptionally well—and uncover why. ?? The Reverse Improvement Challenge Rather than patching weaknesses, let’s: 1. Spot hidden excellence. 2. Understand its success. 3. Spread the magic elsewhere. ?? How to Discover and Amplify Success 1. Find Hidden Excellence ? Identify processes that flow effortlessly. ? Notice teams that collaborate seamlessly. ? Highlight meetings or tasks that run like clockwork. 2. Decode the Secret Sauce ? What makes these examples stand out? ? Which habits, tools, or mindsets drive success? ? How did these practices evolve? 3. Multiply the Magic ? Replicate these success factors in other areas. ? Share insights and tips. ? Create more success stories by amplifying what already works. ?? Real-Life Example A team kept their email inboxes clear without stress. Their secret? They gamified it with “Inbox Zero Heroes.” Now, five other teams are thriving using the same method! ?? Your Challenge 1. Spot Excellence: ? Find 3 things working better than expected—no matter how small! 2. Be Curious: ? Talk to those involved. ? Map out the reasons behind the success. 3. Share and Replicate: ? Spread the discoveries. ? Test these patterns in new areas. ?? Ask Yourself ? What’s working better than expected? ? What problems aren’t happening (but could)? ? Where is success hiding in plain sight? ?? Your Mission This weekend, do one thing: 1. Find a smooth-running process. 2. Uncover what makes it work. 3. Share your insights to inspire others. Remember: Sometimes the biggest improvements come from amplifying success. What excellence will you uncover today? #ReverseImprovement #FocusOnStrengths #ContinuousImprovement #myci #agile #funatwork #leansixsigma

Last week, I read "Wiring the Winning Organization." Reflecting on Gene Kim and Steven J. Spear’s book, I’ve gained valuable insights into driving organizational excellence: 1. Slowification: Slowing down isn't a setback; it's a strategy. Deliberately pacing our work allows time for reflection, creativity, and better decision-making. In practice, this means thoroughly planning and preparing before taking action. 2. Simplification: Complexity is the enemy of efficiency. Breaking down large systems into smaller, manageable components makes problem-solving easier and prevents issues from cascading across the organization. 3. Amplification: Visibility is power. Making problems highly visible and addressing them promptly fosters a culture of transparency and continuous improvement. Straightforward, yet it requires significant effort to integrate these principles into our daily work routines. But if leading companies can adapt and make it work, so can you. #ContinuousImprovement #Agile #Innovation #BusinessTransformation #Learning #Growth #ScaledAgile
