Are power struggles holding back your partnerships? Dive in and share your strategies for fostering trust and equilibrium.

It can be difficult having someone controlling in a partnership. There is no easy way to get through it. I found what helps is trying to understand why that person has the controlling tendency in the first place (fear, insecurity, lack of trust, need for power or dominance etc.) This helps me empathise, see it from their point of view and navigate it more effectively. You'll show you are not there to dominate but only to get that win-win that you are both there to achieve. Disarm them, show them you're on their side and that you are an ally. Plenty of patience and (sincere) praise might help too and 1-2-1 chats to build that relationship.

Start by acknowledging the partner’s influence but assert your role clearly. According to Forbes, partnerships thrive on mutual respect, with over 70% reporting better outcomes when roles and contributions are clearly defined. Foster trust by actively listening, addressing concerns, and ensuring decisions are made collaboratively. Implement regular check-ins to balance control, creating a space where both parties contribute equally and feel valued.

To establish trust and balance in a partnership with a controlling dynamic, start by setting clear expectations and boundaries from the outset. Communicate openly about your needs and contributions, ensuring both parties recognize each other’s value. Foster transparency through regular updates and honest dialogue, demonstrating reliability and mutual respect. Encourage collaboration by involving the partner in decision-making processes, while also asserting your authority when necessary. Building trust requires consistency and patience, so lead by example in fostering a respectful, balanced relationship where both sides feel equally heard and empowered.

Start by initiating a candid conversation with your partner about the dynamic. Acknowledge the controlling behaviour without being confrontational, and express your concerns. Frame the discussion around the need for collaboration and mutual respect. By addressing the issue directly, you show that you’re committed to building a more balanced partnership, which is a key step in establishing trust.
