UVM and all universities need to realize that all fields of study and thought are valuable not just STEM. Some of the most valuable work comes from multidisciplinary study. Focusing soley on STEM plays directly into what Geographers call a risk society: One where technological advancements are made without proper foresight into potential future negative impacts—instead these negative impacts are addressed with even more technological advancement without proper foresight leading to a cycle —hence the coining of the term risk society. This brings up important topics like indigenous ways of thought that were largely destroyed due to mass genocide, leaving a puzzle needing to be rewoven and wounds that need to be healed. Also, I’m sorry, but so many of your non-tenure track faculty are seriously underpaid. People like Joan Rosebush (Rosie) put an incredible amount of work beyond reckoning into making UVM a special place. We need better equity not only among faculty, but also again among domains of study and ways of thought. This is the best path forward and how we will emerge from our current risk society stronger and more connected, not only with eachother, but also the natural world among us (GEOG: nature-society).

No pun intended. It is truly an honor to work with Joel Podolny and his executive team at Honor Education. In the three months I’ve been working with them, their passion and earnestness for making a difference in learning is energizing. One outcome of this work will be a course I’m co-authoring with Joel on “Developing Thought Leadership” with 10 accomplished executive leaders who join us on each of 10 lessons to share their insight and experience on how to advance your own thought leadership. What is amazing about Honor as they launch a NEXT LEVEL learning management system is the extraordinary focus they are placing on the toughest challenge online learning faces: student and collective engagement. If you really think about it, much of how we learn in a classroom is peer to peer, wrestling with the questions and problems posed by the course. So how do we use AI and next level technology to bring the richness of collective engagement to the forefront of the learning experience? Joel will be talking about the evolution of online education and future trends on Tuesday at the ASU+GSV Summit. The Best Graduation Speech of 2024 Is Absolutely Obvious, and It All Comes Down to Just 1 Word. A rainy day and an abbreviated speech, but some very useful lessons were shared. Robert Hale Jr.'s address to the graduates of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth was truly memorable. He gave $1,000 in cash to each graduate, with $500 for them to keep and $500 to give away to someone in need. Certainly, giving money to graduates is a sure way to win hearts. However, the speech was more than just a generous gesture. From humble beginnings of washing dishes to becoming a dot-com billionaire, Hale shared his journey of success, failure, and redemption.
