As our world becomes more unpredictable, futures literacy is emerging as a crucial skill for businesses wanting to navigate today’s challenges and prepare for what’s next. Answering the UN Secretary-General’s call that “we cannot create a future fit for our grandchildren with a system built by our grandparents,” our #London studio and Portland Design are partnering with superFUTURES.RCA—the Royal College of Art’s research-driven speculative spatial design branch—to bring #futuresthinking to the forefront of the built environment.? Over the next six months, we’ll host a series of small roundtable discussions to explore the themes shaping our future spaces: magic, community, and resilience. Resident Spatial Futures Advisor gem barton lead these conversations, diving deep into designing spaces that embrace change and inspire connection. ?? MAUCA Student Experience: Harish Ramasamy, Class of 2024 – Reflections on the Third Trimester ?? Harish Ramasamy, a student in the Class of 2024, shared these reflections on the third trimester of the #MAUCA program: "As climate change and global warming intensified, I pursued a master’s in Architecture, Urbanism, and Climate Action (MAUCA) at UCD to explore sustainable design, low-carbon development, and architecture’s role in solving these crises." Harish found the program provided "invaluable insights through modules like Arc-GIS ?? for #ClimateAnalysis, retrofitting techniques ??, and Ireland’s building regulations ??." He particularly appreciated the academic staff’s "humility, open-mindedness, and commitment," which, he said, "helped me develop a deeper understanding of #Sustainability." As he progressed into the second trimester, Harish noted that his expertise in #UrbanDesignTheories and #ResearchMethodologies "deepened," allowing him to apply his knowledge to a live urban park project ??, where he "blended creativity with #SustainableSolutions." He noted that a major turning point in his journey was his research internship on the ReCUGI project during his third trimester at UCD. He worked under the mentorship of Dr. Philip Crowe, contributing to #CarbonEmissionsReduction and compact urban growth initiatives, using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools to evaluate #EnvironmentalImpacts. Reflecting on this, Harish shared: "This hands-on experience not only solidified my understanding of sustainable urbanism ?? but also equipped me with practical skills to approach real-world challenges in sustainable architecture." Now working at MCA Architects as an Environmental/Sustainable Assistant Architect, Harish expresses excitement about his role, which allows him to contribute to various #SustainableProjects. He credits the knowledge gained during his UCD internship for giving him "a strong foundation in #SustainablePractices." He is now focused on "applying these insights to drive innovative and #SustainableArchitecturalPractices, contributing to a #GreenerFuture." Harish concludes: "UCD’s #MAUCA master’s program has helped me unlock my potential, and I am eager to continue making a meaningful contribution to the future of #SustainableDesign and #UrbanDevelopment ??."

Believe it or not, creativity is a skill. Let me explain: Like most things, becoming good at "being creative" takes a lot of practice. The more you do something, the better you become. Similar to soccer, in the field of design, understanding the basics correctly will ensure that you are able to move toward breaking these rules. If you try to shoot a rabona on the first day of practice, you have a greater chance of falling flat on your face! (Trust me, I speak from experience.) In the field of architecture and design, injecting creative flair into your work requires only a few things: 1. An observant eye 2. Being unfazed by your own mistakes 3. An openness to learn from almost any experience 4. A lot of exploring and research (even in your professional practice!) Once you start practicing these things, you'll notice that your creativity will slowly but surely flourish. ?? This is how I practice creativity daily. -------- Hello, I'm Ayesha, a LEED Green Associate and a practicing architect and interior designer. Building with circularity in mind is essential to the betterment of the future. Let's connect and build together! -------- #architecturedesign #summerbreak #architecturestudent #interns2024 #interiordesign #thoughtleadership

#justathought The growing trend of students and young professionals paying for additional design courses outside of their formal education raises serious concerns within the design fraternity. Despite already investing in their education through college fees, students are increasingly drawn to supplementary courses offered by various individuals, often through platforms like Instagram. This has led to a situation where undergraduate students, contractors, carpenters, and other non-design professionals are joining these fragmented classes, attempting to learn design in bits and pieces. This phenomenon not only undervalues formal education but also promotes a dangerous cycle of half-baked knowledge. The industry risks being flooded with individuals who possess superficial design skills but lack the depth and rigor that professional training provides. The allure of polished English-speaking instructors and the promise of learning design skills without thorough training or understanding has turned this into a misguided business model that preys on eager learners. The root of this issue could be addressed by integrating practical design skills and knowledge during internships, where students are paid stipends, allowing them to learn directly from experienced professionals in a structured environment. This would ensure that students gain real-world experience while being fairly compensated, instead of paying for incomplete education through unregulated courses. The design community needs to address this growing problem by advocating for stronger industry standards, promoting genuine mentorship opportunities, and encouraging students to seek credible pathways to learning. It's crucial to protect the integrity of the design profession and ensure that future generations are equipped with the comprehensive skills required to uphold its standards. #architect #beingarchitect #archdaily #interior #coa #iia #architecturaldigest #ssdassociates #architecture

Through the design of functional green areas, the aim is to create a more fluid connectivity between the different spaces of the campus, which are sometimes fragmented and divided by public roads. Green therefore acts as both a visual and spatial connector. The graphic icon system was developed with the aim of communicating the functional green areas in the clearest and most immediate way possible, aiming to make them recognizable and understandable for future users of the campus. #amaart #bfeducational #innovation #green #visualidentity #formazione #ricerca #grafic #innovazione #campus #landscape #sostenibile #design #wayfinding #signage #greenery #designproposal?#beautifularchitecture?#sustainable #sustainablearchitecture?#sustainablesolutions #futureproof?#innovation?#architecturetender?#urbandevelopment #urbancore?#naturalwayfinding
