OSHA will play an invaluable role in bringing employers into the fold on such topics as distracted driving, speeding, impairment and specially fatigue.It will encourage employers to implement safe driving policies and techniques for workers and ensure that work requirements or expectations do not contribute to unsafe driving.

In a significant move to enhance workplace safety, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has partnered with the National Safety Council (NSC) and the Road to Zero Coalition to address motor vehicle incidents—the leading cause of workplace fatalities in the United States. In 2023, transportation-related incidents accounted for 36.8% of the 5,283 fatal work injuries nationwide. This collaboration aims to foster a culture of safety by encouraging employers to integrate safe driving and transportation practices into their safety and health management systems. OSHA’s Motor Vehicle Safety webpage offers guidance on developing written policies and procedures, covering topics such as vehicle maintenance, seat belt use, and preventing distracted, drowsy, and impaired driving. As Lorraine Martin, NSC president and CEO, stated, “The most dangerous thing a person can do on the job is get in a vehicle.” Every day, countless individuals leave their homes, bidding farewell to their loved ones, with the simple intention of earning an honest living. Tragically, some never return due to preventable roadway incidents. These are not mere statistics but fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters whose absence leaves a void in families and communities. By embracing and promoting safe driving practices, we honor their memory and commit to ensuring that more workers return home safely at the end of each day. Slips, trips, and falls are a leading cause of workplace injury and death, and although a persistent challenge, they must remain top of mind. Use the Right Ladder: Ensure the ladder is appropriate for the task and has a suitable height and weight capacity. 3?? Set It Up Securely: Place the ladder on a stable, non-slippery surface and maintain a proper angle (4:1 ratio for extension ladders). 4?? Climb Safely: Face the ladder, maintain three points of contact, and never overreach. 5?? Avoid the Top Steps: Unless there’s a proper handrail, the top two steps of a ladder should not be used to prevent falls. By following these simple practices, you can work smarter and safer.
