This past weekend we got to celebrate the life of Seth Hufford on what would have been his 50th birthday. While I understand that LinkedIn may not be the typical platform for such a post, I felt compelled to share these reflections on Seth's life in a professional context. These are not just professional reflections but personal ones as well. From an equity/DEI perspective, Seth was one of the few white guys I knew who really worked to understand how he showed up in the world and how to use his privilege to support others. Seth was always willing to have difficult conversations with anyone and everyone. When he shared stories from his work, I always thought, I am glad you are the one to facilitate these learnings because I, for one, would not have the patience. The learning that I took from Seth that I want to share is that this (equity) work is never done; you can't just get a certificate in anti-bias principles and call it a day. The work is ongoing, and we must constantly reflect and question who we are and how we show up. The second reflection is the importance of inter-generational friendships. While Seth was 12 years older than me (I always reminded him), we were close friends, and it was great. This friendship started when I was in my early 20s and Seth in his mid-30s. Yes, we connected on professional things, and I was a big proponent of Seth starting his own business, but it was just friends supporting each other and wasn't a mentor/mentee thing (though I did learn a lot from Seth, and I miss him all the time). If you are moved by this post and want to contribute to the Seth Hufford Memorial Fund, you will be supporting some great causes. - https://lnkd.in/ejepYkBU

Nonprofit organizations are particularly crucial for communities that lack resources where they address systemic inequalities and provide essential support in areas such as education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and social justice. Nonprofit organizations often serve as advocates for the community, working to dismantle discriminatory practices and policies that disproportionately affect a certain demographic. By offering programs and services tailored to the unique needs of the community, nonprofits help to close gaps in access to resources and opportunities.

Our CEO and Founder, Karen Hung, had the honor of sharing the mic on Ellenbecker Investment Group's “Milwaukee’s Philanthropic Community" podcast along with Jim Stollberg, Halftime Co-CEO and Tim Hanley, Senior Advisor, Marquette University. Thank you, Jill Economou, for the candid conversation about “purpose driven process” and the advent of Silver Rock Consulting. Key soundbites?? ??Have the courage and confidence to dig in if you have an idea to pursue or are passionate about a cause. ??Think about the good you can do at your highest level to bring value and purpose into the world—and gain personal satisfaction in the process. ?? Formal mentoring is important, by serving as an advisor and sounding board.? But also consider advocacy and sponsorship. Advocating for someone—both inside and outside of the room—is just as powerful.? Sponsorship is choosing to do something to tangible, such as a job or opportunity, to help someone have a platform to shine. ?? Consider this perspective on board involvement for both active and interested board leaders:?Accountability is table stakes; one needs to also think about courageous leadership and having a moral compass.? Sound off in the comments below ???? I’d love to hear your experience! I’ve been able to serve as an Executive Director/CEO and a board member of a few nonprofits. The board-ED relationship is probably the most important relationship when it comes to moving a nonprofit forward. Yet, it’s usually the most challenging. Here’s what I know: ??There is a critical need for the ED and the Board to share a unified vision and strategy to steer the organization effectively. ?? Boundaries are ABSOLUTELY necessary to distinguish the distinct roles and responsibilities of the ED and the Board to avoid micromanagement or role confusion. ?? Both the ED and the Board have to balance their passion for the mission with practical considerations for organizational management. If you’re a nonprofit leader or a board member for one - what have you learned? Comment below!

Failure is formative. Shutting the doors on my second nonprofit was one of the most formative moments of my career. Following the launch and national recognition of CARPOOL at Texas A&M University, I created a similar program for spring breakers in South Padre Island. I was surrounded by a dream team of leaders who had put everything in place—volunteers, food, lodging, cars, sponsors, public relations, telecommunications, training, branding, and more. We were ready to serve, and I had a few more meetings to secure the necessary funding. Months earlier, I had been contacted by a Fortune 100 company asking if they could serve as our national partner in accelerating the expansion of the CARPOOL program nationwide. I felt important when that company flew two VPs to College Station, Texas, to meet with our team to work out the details. After a marathon of meetings, the Fortune 100 company agreed to fund the entire operation. Nothing could go wrong now. With Spring Break only a few months away, I couldn’t predict what would happen next. Quarterly earnings were released, and the company posted its first losing quarter in almost six years. They pulled the plug on most of their education budget, which included our project, among others. It was too late to secure funding from another source, and we had to shutter the project. I knew that this failure would help to form me as a leader – here are two of my top takeaways: Diversify Your Revenue Sources – I should have pursued other funding even when I was confident that we would have enough from this one partner. Don’t Read Your Own Press - It felt good to be approached by brands I admired. I can’t help that part, but I let that feeling cloud my judgment and efforts. Failure is formative. #UndividedLife #TransformationalLeadership #KeynoteSpeaker?
