AAU is on a mission to shape the future. Today, I had the privilege of discussing the next Framework Program with Cecilie Br?kner from Innovation Fund Denmark and Director General for Research and Innovation Marc Lemaitre in Brussels. The complex challenges facing our societies demand a fresh scientific approach. Collaboration among policymakers, businesses, civil society, and scientists from diverse disciplines is crucial. It's about setting aside disciplinary boundaries and working together from the outset. As universities we must actively engage in partnerships, knowledge circulation, and interaction with society around us. This collaborative spirit is at the core of AAU's mission-oriented approach. I firmly believe that universities play a pivotal role in driving change and prosperity, and by prioritizing mission-oriented research, we align with the goals of the European Commission and pave the way for meaningful progress. A very insightful discussion, focussing on a simple question, often with a quite complex answer. What difference has my work made? Something we should all be asking ourselves, academics and practitioners alike. Thanks you Saurabh Sinha for extending the invite.
Peter Gostomski (Acting DVC: Research), Elizabeth Hopkins (Director: Research and Innovation) & I had the pleasure of meeting with Professors Erika Kraemer-Mbula and Chris Brink. Erika had been part of the 2021 review panel [UK Research Excellence Framework (REF)] and Chris, Emeritus Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Newcastle University (UK) and former Rector & VC, Stellenbosch University (ZA), provided a strong "calling" for the Impact agenda and how to go about achieving this. We reflected on the New Zealand Science System Advisory Group (SSAG) questions from a global (glocal) perspective. Erika and Chris are authors of multiple books; as they spoke – two books of their books came to mind: (1) The Soul of a University: Why Excellence is not Enough Chris Brink https://lnkd.in/ekEXu52C (2) Transforming Research Excellence: New Ideas from the Global South Erika Kraemer-Mbula et al (editors) https://lnkd.in/eG7Jgf7B #UCEngExcellence University of Canterbury | UC Engineering

The association of higher education communicators in Europe, EUPRIO believes that research is one of the cornerstones of our progress as a society. However, as it usually happens, research is in constant need of funding. This needed to be communicated towards European leaders. The Right Street supported a campaign advocating for increased research and development funding in the EU budget. First, we developed a strategy framework in collaboration with the client. Based on that we helped create the campaign’s tools, including visuals, the tagline and the website. EUPRIO used these to bring together universities, research organisations, funding agencies, and industry partners to reach decision-makers and stakeholders at every level. The efforts helped set a new discourse for debate around research funding, exemplified by President Von Der Leyen endorsing the message that Europe needs new resources for R&D to strengthen its competitiveness: https://lnkd.in/efvZb8D7

2.9% of Tri-Council funding goes to Colleges. Colleges and Institutes in Canada are an un-tapped resource for applied research and key to addressing the challenges related to productivity which are facing the Canadian economy. Research work done at Colleges is closely tied to community benefit. That can be industry related, but in the case of my own research, it can also be focused directly on social issues. Let's hope that the Tri-Council funding agencies recognize the systemic barriers to supporting research at Colleges and work with us to encourage the innovation that we and our students bring to our communities.
Yesterday, our President and CEO, Pari Johnston, shared powerful insights on enhancing college research impact at the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Science and Research. Key takeaways include reimagining the role of colleges and institutes in the Canadian innovation ecosystem, fostering challenge-driven research, and addressing funding barriers. Did you know that KU Leuven has secured more grants from Horizon Europe than any other university in Europe? ?? Out of the 95.5 bilion € that Horizon Europe budgeted since 2021, KU Leuven has won 247€ milion on 418 projects. But KU Leuven is not alone. Also 2 other flemish universities Ghent University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel are top Horizon Europe performers. Flanders expending 3.65% of its GDP in research may play an important role. Part of it goes to fund the growing support staff such as grant facilitators, that help steering scientists proposals. With majority of universities underfunded and not able to afford those incentives, it's likeky that universities will turn to private facilitators that make up for the lack of personnel. If you want to know how Back2Lab can help your institution in this topic, don't doubt to contact us! #HorizonEurope #ResearchFunding #Flanders #KULeuven #Back2Lab #funding https://lnkd.in/eY6r4q9d

#ThrowbackThursday On 1 March 2024, Zinaida Vasilyeva took part in the first meeting of the working group "Institutionalisation" (AG Instituzionaliesirung) organised by the German Society for Transdisciplinary and Participatory Research (GTPF e.V.). Participants from different German academic institutions discussed mutual expectations and plans and agreed to work towards more #Institutionalised structures for #Transdisciplinary and #Participatory #Research in Germany and to further develop #Theoretical and #Methodological frameworks. The project IETI: Impact-oriented Public Engagement is happy to join this initiative, which is very timely: although the terms of "transdisciplinarity" and "participation" are frequently used, and there is a dramatic increase in projects working across disciplines, social fields and publics beyond academia, the standards and methodologies applied vary considerably and require further discussion and theoretical and methodological elaboration. We look forward to participating in the group, learning from colleagues and contributing from a #PublicEngagement perspective. #ImpactResearch #ImpactPlanning #ImpactAssessment #CultureChange #CoCreation #Stakeholders #Innovation #IETI is hosted by the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung.
