Tribeca Belfast and the on-screen regeneration of Northern Ireland This article looks at media representations of the projected regeneration of Northern Ireland, paying particular attention to a recent promotional film made to elicit support for the redevelopment of a part of Belfast’s city centre. Commissioned by Castlebrooke Investments, ‘Tribeca Belfast’ offers a future prospectus of the city that is as superficial as it is bland. It is, however, illustrative of two influential ideas and strategies that took flight at the end of the Cold War and the ‘triumph of capitalism’. One seeks peace through the application of neo-liberal nostrums; the other combines brand theory with state-craft in pursuit of global competitiveness. Both propose models of citizenship that are politically benign, either preferring middle class solipsism or demanding brand loyalty. In Castlebrooke’s projection of a future Belfast, this translates into a city peopled by a mobile professional class, waited upon and entertained by servile locals. But such a sterile vision is inimical to building peace and political progress because it underestimates and downplays the significance of marginalized groups who through their activism and expressions of solidarity can lay better claim to the ‘heart and soul’ of Belfast evoked by Castlebrooke. Culture is not just a nice to have: it is fundamental to the very happiness of society. ? Sunderland City Council's innovative case study has been featured during the recent Key Cities Innovation Network Conference last week held at the University of Bradford, on the theme: "Culture, Place and Development". Presented by Cllr Kevin Johnston, Cabinet member for Housing, Regeneration and Business, the case study highlighted Sunderland's transformation by cross-sector partnership to deliver place-based programmes such as Sunderland Culture. ? The Conference took place just five weeks before Bradford assumes the mantle of UK City of Culture, and was joined by Prof. shirley congdon, Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe (Bradford Council), Cllr Jemima Laing (Plymouth City Council, Darren Henley CBE (Arts Council England), Dr Jaideep Gupte (Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)) and Shanaz Gulzar (Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture). ? Hi friends (in particular those in Ontario and Quebec!). I'm hoping I can ask for your advice and a few suggested connections in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal! In the latter half of July, I'm planning a self-guided "mini-sabbatical" (aka "study tour") as I embark on deep exploration of collaborative governance structures and processes, collaborative leadership philosophies and practices, public/private partnerships, cross-sectoral / multi-disciplinary teams -- as applied to cities, metropolitan regions, and civic issues in general. I'm looking for suggested projects, community leaders, founders/board directors etc. from those three cities who created or lead collaborative approaches to solving the complex issues that cities and municipalities face. I don't mean collaboration on paper or joint press releases used for political points, I mean real sleeves-up, hands-in-the-dirt project work that is moving the needle on a local issue(s) by bringing diverse groups together and leveraging each other's strengths and resources. My passion for urbanism mostly applies to economic development (in particular: how can we create inclusive and vibrant economies within metropolitan cities that are aligned to our values and to 21st century challenges and opportunities). That stated, I believe - and have witnessed - that collaborative leadership as a philosophy and as a practice applies to many civic disciplines and issues/outcome areas. Four years post-pandemic, New York City Economic Development Corporation’s first-ever “State of the Economy” report paints an encouraging picture of New York City’ economy, which has done more than just recover. In many ways, we have built back stronger. Some highlights: - We’re at record-high employment.? - We're the top destination in the country for young talent. - We’re a global leader in innovative industries, with an AI revolution already underway. - Every new day brings more subway riders and tourists, and fewer vacant stores and offices. Challenges still exist, such as rising housing costs and racial disparities in employment. But this administration has taken decisive policy action to solve them, including the "New" New York Action Plan and the recently passed City of Yes for Housing Opportunity Bill.
