CTO network - I have a question for you. ? Is a technical background essential for a CTO? ? In a discussion last week with Alex Farr, group CTO at Christie Group, the change in requirements for the role was prominent. ? Many moons ago when I hired my first CTO, technical expertise was the number one thing any hiring company wanted. ? Now the picture is very different. ? Some barely even mention candidates’ experience with tech. ? My question for you - why is this? ? And is a technical background even essential anymore? ? #CTO #Tech

Stop telling people about your board members. Stop bragging about your 90s Microsoft career. Stop sending walls of text about being a "globally dominant partner." People only care about two things: 1. How can you help solve their problem? 2. Are you credible? As tech leaders, we need to cut through the noise. Our customers don't care about our resume - they care about results. #StartupHustle

Very succinct post on buying vs building technology.
3x Technical Founder & Impact-Driven CTO | Visionary, Strategic & Hands-On Leader | Bridging Strategy, Execution & Scalable Impact
Let's build it in-house! The engineer in me: I love it. The CTO in me: I can do much better. As a 3x technical founder, I realized: ? Build vs Buy isn't technical. ? It's strategic. Few could be wrong decisions to build: ? Building payment systems ? Custom email service ? Chat systems ? Authentication systems The real deal: ? It is not about what we CAN build. ? It is about what we SHOULD build. Answer this: Does it create a competitive advantage? if not, BUY might be better for you. Are you for BUY or BUILD? What's your biggest build vs buy lesson? P.S. Open to senior engineering leadership roles (CTO, VP/Head of Eng). #TechLeadership #Engineering #CTO #EngineeringLeadership #TechnologyStrategy ----- ?? Ignite your network: ? Share this post ? ?? Dear CTOs: It's Time to Take Back Control and Responsibility Are you the only manager who needs permission to direct your own department's work? As CTO, you're entrusted with millions dollars of salaries. Yet many CTOs delegate critical decisions to product teams: ? Infrastructure upgrades ? Technical debt ? Security measures ? Internal tooling ? Innovation & R&D The hard truth: When things go wrong, #YOU are accountable Why do you expect accountability from every developer? And you delegate accountability to product management? Without a role model, people will not get it. It's not what you say but what you do. If you don't take the most important decisions yourself, how can you expect developers to make important decisions? ????Here's what your #CEO actually expects: ? Development for product management ? Strategic technical direction ? Infrastructure stability ? Security leadership ? Innovation pipeline ? Cross-departmental support ?? Solution: Take back control. Work with your CEO to establish clear development budgets: ? 60% Product development ? 15% Marketing ? 15% Sales support ? 10% Scalability/maintenance ? 5 % Technical R&D Remember: #Leadership isn't about delegating accountability - it's about owning it. #TechLeadership #Engineering #CTO #TechStrategy More: https://lnkd.in/dFDMpgYr

Technical leaders at a company should be highly technical, for five primary reasons: 1. Exceptional technical ability is the only way for CTOs/VPEs to be true judges of quality—to?know?the difference between good and great (across hiring engineers, system design, etc.) 2. It allows them to make highly educated tradeoffs—between quality, speed, launch dates, feature inclusion etc. Making the right tradeoffs is one of the cornerstones of great leadership. 3. It enables them to command the respect of the entire team. It’s hard to take your leader seriously if you do not feel deep down that they could do your job if needed. That they could roll up their sleeves and fix the bug they are asking you to fix. 4. A somewhat more subtle reason: highly technical people very often have a deep passion for technology. They want to push the boundaries of what is possible. Those are the kind of people who are able to inspire teams to greatness. Passionate technical leaders bring a positive giddiness to otherwise mundane tasks. They don't just see technology as a means to an end—they are excited about the means. That’s the mark of a true visionary. 5. Finally, highly technical leaders have a much easier time attracting and recruiting other highly technical people. Great engineers don't want to work for someone who is just a great people manager. For all the above reasons, they want to work for a leader who matches their ability. https://lnkd.in/g9AvdeSy

Transitioning from a software engineer to a CTO is a significant journey that involves not just a shift in responsibilities but also in mindset. As engineers, we focus on building and optimizing systems, but as CTOs, we must think strategically about how technology drives business success.
