At IPC, we're proud to be outspoken about the need for PBM reform. The unchecked practices of pharmacy benefit managers have placed immense financial strain on so many independent pharmacies, so we feel it's our duty to advocate for PBM reform. We urge Congress to act swiftly and decisively to pass the must-pass PBM reform legislation, ensuring transparency, fairness, and sustainability in the prescription drug market. The recent hearing titled “The Role of Pharmacy Benefit Managers in Prescription Drug Markets Part III: Transparency and Accountability" that took place on the 23rd was a pivotal moment in our industry and I hope this is the beginning of much-needed reform for PBMs. #IPC #PBMReform #PharmacyBenefitManager

"The New York State Department of Financial Services (“DFS”) released?“pre-proposed” consolidated rulemaking?related to the business practices of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (“PBMs”) licensed to operate in New York... ... the?latest draft regulations seek to restrict a wide range of PBM practices and impose certain administrative requirements, including a more onerous notification requirement in the event of a PBM change in control. If ultimately adopted by DFS, the draft regulations would: > Prohibit PBMs from barring in-network pharmacies from providing mail order or delivery services; > Require PBMs to allow pharmacies to exchange information with PBMs electronically; > Require PBMs to maintain accurate, online drug formularies (lists of covered prescription drugs) and pharmacy directories; > Require PBMs to publicly post a telephone number and email address for consumer inquiries and impose mandatory PBM response timelines for consumer inquiries; > Prohibit PBM “steerage” towards larger pharmacies that have an affiliation or other relationship with the PBM; > Set reimbursement for pharmacies at no less than what an affiliated PBM pharmacy receives in the same network; > Prohibit certain other PBM practices, including removing a drug from a formulary or denying drug coverage without regard to the plan design, or imposing “gag clauses” on pharmacies; and > Require PBMs to apply consistent audit and recoupment standards across pharmacies." https://lnkd.in/dQwPZXk5

Glad there is an investigation into Pharmacy Benefit Manager organizations ... keep it going Lina Kahn and the FTC. -- The top three PBMs processed nearly 80 percent of the approximately 6.6 billion prescriptions dispensed by U.S. pharmacies in 2023, while the top six PBMs processed more than 90 percent. -- The market for pharmacy benefit management services has become highly concentrated, and the largest PBMs are now also vertically integrated with the nation’s largest health insurers and specialty and retail pharmacies. https://lnkd.in/gRntJQU9

While I'm skeptical that action by Congress will improve things, it's a net positive that this opaque part of the medical care industry is getting attention and, hopefully, greater transparency. Check out the article attached. Not all drugs available are always safe and effective. The current onslaught of GLP's may result in dire consequences with long term side effects such as gastric stasis, pancreatitis and even thyroid cancer. Right now your PBM is simply providing a revolving door for approval of the GLP's based on the financial incentives provided by PhRMA in the form of "Class of Trade Discounts" or "Purchasing Contributions" for their mail pharmacies, that goes directly to their profit line. The potential liability due simply to the cost of these and how they affect premiums and potential raises could be the tip of the iceberg if 20 - 30% of your members receiving the GLPs develop these side effects. This is just one reason why the industry needs to change and require Fiduciary Independent Pharmacy Utilization Management to contractually manage your utilization in the best interests of your company and your members.
