Today, Secretary Carroll joined Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to share an update on the plan for winter services, highlight job opportunities, and encourage public preparedness for the season. He also highlighted a new lighting option signed into law by Office of Governor Josh Shapiro this summer. PennDOT, the PA Turnpike, municipalities, and contractors working on their behalf may now install flashing or revolving green lights in addition to yellow (amber) lights to make construction and maintenance operations more visible and improve road safety this winter. The balance between strategic growth and protecting the quality of life of existing residents should be a priority for ALL city and county elected officials in Florida. Elected officials approving residential developments knowing surrounding infrastructure (school, roads, etc.) and emergency services (police and fire) are struggling to meet current capacity levels is a dereliction of duty. It’s time to take a smart, strategic and sensible growth management approach to urban planning.

When people are getting hurt or killed on problem streets, immediate action is warranted. Commissioning a study can put months or even years between your city and action. Instead, begin by using inexpensive, widely available materials such as hay bales, cones and paint to temporarily redesign the street. When you see an improvement in safety, plan for more permanent infrastructure updates to lock in your success.
