Empowered by Knowledge Louise Labuschagne completed a free cancer course. "I was asked to provide feedback on the AICF course, a valuable resource for nurses seeking to enhance their understanding of cancer and the challenges faced by our patients. The most significant benefit I gained from this course was personal growth. I learned to change my approach, improve my communication, and prioritize patient needs. Patients and their families trust us with their lives, especially when facing a life-altering cancer diagnosis. This course helped me develop the patience and skills needed to support them effectively. It covers essential topics, going beyond theory to delve into the emotional and psychological aspects of patient care. This includes palliative support, quick decision-making, and our role in supporting not only the patient but also their family and friends. Furthermore, it equipped me with the confidence to lead training for my colleagues, which was an enriching experience. The AICF course provided me with valuable knowledge and personal growth. I'm eager to share what I've learned, and I'm grateful to our Nursing Manager, Sharon Erasmus, the ICCF trainer, Vivian, and CANCERCARE for making this opportunity possible"- Oncology Nursing Sister Supervisor Louise Labuschagne. Onboarding patients is such an important step in the medical treatment process.
Iris Oncology Nurses do amazing work providing 24/7 care and support for our members with cancer. And sometimes they take a "break" to share the results of the work of our interdisciplinary team with their peers. Lindsay Boudinot and Christie Frick, RN, BSN, OCN presented results at the Oncology Nursing Society ONS Congress 2024 in Washington, DC this week. I'm happy to share our newest article, coming from my doctoral work. Arthur Frank, a Canadian sociologist, argues that when someone is diagnosed with cancer, the diagnosis irreversibly changes that person's story and sense of self, causing a "narrative wreckage". While your story becomes "shipwrecked by the storm of disease" (as stated by Frank), storytelling (and telling stories about your illness experience, or about who you were before your illness) can repair and reorient your story and sense of self into new terrain, to help generate a new story and sense of self for your life with (and hopefully after) your illness experience. In our paper, we extend on this conceptualization, arguing that narrative repair is not solely an individual process. Rather, we highlight that when a child is diagnosed with cancer, an entire family's story and sense of being has been shipwrecked, and that pediatric oncology nurses, in the proximity they have and relationships they build with these families, engage in narrative repair for the families. These nurses also further engage in narrative repair in their own moral identities, as their work often limits them from fully being the "nurse they want to be". I'm really proud of this paper - check it out if you like!

DNP and PhD-prepared nurses have a dynamic partnership essential in advancing oncology care. DNPs bring robust clinical expertise, appreciative inquiry, and evidence-based implementation to identify pressing practice concerns and gaps in the nursing literature. PhDs harness research acumen to transform these challenges into rigorous inquiries to close the research gaps. This symbiotic relationship spurs evidence-based practice, leading to more quickly disseminated, implemented care improving patient outcomes. The?Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing?invites full-length oncology manuscript submissions highlighting this powerful combination, showcasing collaborative, innovative research-to-practice initiatives that have affected patient care. Please submit your manuscript by December 31, 2024, for consideration. Visit ons.org/cjon/authors for details on preparing and submitting a manuscript, or email me at [email protected]?with any questions or to discuss your potential topic. https://lnkd.in/g6uTUak6

Two complete opposites in terms of implementation: 1. Barriers to scalp cooling with regards potential introduction and 2. Implementation to complement significant growth and demand for scalp cooling. The diversity within the UK is incredible. Look forward to answering your questions at UKONS.
This year at UKONS (UK Oncology Nursing Society) there are two abstracts featuring scalp cooling! Thank you to nurses Shannon Copeland and Natasha Ivens for choosing to highlight scalp cooling during this years conference. Find their posters at UKONS next week. #ChangingTheFaceOfCancer #ScalpCooling Stuart Rowling Jack Forster-Darwin
