Do you know that NPI operates the Rural Violent Crime Reduction Initiative (RVCRI)? Funded by BJA, this program offers technical training and assistance to rural law enforcement agencies nationwide. Recently, the RVCRI team attended and offered a panel presentation at the National Criminal Justice Association's 2024 Forum on Criminal Justice. Great start. But spotting the signs is only stage one. Having the trusted relationship with the young person to be able to have the difficult conversation is the next stage. Then being in it for the long haul and being consistent is crucial. Finally knowing how to help them when they ask. Many of the young people we spoke to in our study were let down time and time again when they asked for help. We can spot the signs but we need to do some serious work around getting young people the help they need to escape their exploiters.
