On Wednesday (August 7), the Delaware Department of Education developed new guidance for districts and charter schools on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom. This document is the culmination of an eight-month collaborative effort with the state’s Council on Educational Technology and its Generative AI Subcommittee. Key Highlights of the Guidance: 1. Benefits and Risks of AI: - Advantages: AI can enhance K-12 education by improving efficiency, speed in data analysis, and error reduction. It can personalize content, support student creativity, provide tutoring, and help students develop critical thinking and future skills. - Cautions: Potential risks include privacy concerns, lack of creativity, ethical issues, plagiarism, misinformation, social bias, bullying, overreliance on AI, and unequal access to AI tools. 2. Strategies for Implementation: - The guidance suggests strategies to address these challenges, helping districts and charter schools develop local policies. - It emphasizes that AI integration should prioritize student safety, educational integrity, and evidence-based instructional methodologies. 3. According to the 2024 Voice of the Superintendent Survey by EAB in the US, almost all school superintendents agree that teaching students how to use AI effectively and responsibly is crucial. "Key Findings: Schools of education are not likely to move quickly or at a large enough scale to train America’s future teachers in AI without a significant shift in faculty interest and capacity building. With few exceptions, schools of education are just now beginning to put new AI training, curriculum, and coursework into place. Many education schools are more focused on supporting faculty than training future teachers and more focused on dealing with student plagiarism than on a broader vision of how AI could transform teaching and learning. While education school leaders are generally optimistic about the positive potential of AI in education, faculty indifference or resistance could impede their ability to adapt, making it harder to prepare future K-12 teachers for the realities of AI."

As part of the Learn portion of our Summit on Saturday, we featured students, teachers, and leaders from K12 and Higher Education sharing how they are adopting AI. We kicked off our AI in Education Showcase with district leaders from Orange County (CA), Catawba County (NC), and Arcadia Schools (CA). They highlighted their perspectives, experiences, strategies, and best practices for AI implementation.
