When I was little my favorite things included babies, flowers, jumping, dancing, laughing, hugs and kisses. Here are 5 favorite things that I have added as an adult:
1 → Being barefoot on the grass
Through the worst months of chronic cold sweating, I learned that being barefoot on the grass made it stop. Since then I have created a habit of being barefoot on the grass every morning when I wake. It feels like a blessing.
2 → Taking a shower in the middle of the day
To me, this is truly luxurious. The feeling of being able to take a shower at 2 pm on a Tuesday is freeing. It’s symbolic of the lifestyle I am creating for myself.
3 → Cooking a special meal for friends or family
When I have the time, I love to cook. If I’ve had something at a restaurant that I *loved* I will try to recreate it at home, if I can. Most recently: a polenta dish with chicken, roasted tomatoes, caramelized onions, mushrooms and pine nuts. Divine.
4 → The feeling of a Sunday morning in the fall season
Sundays are my favorite. Those who read my intro post already know this. But Sunday mornings? Favorite favorite. And Sunday mornings on crispy October/November days? Favorite favorite *favorite*. Something about it feels so peaceful and contemplative. It’s healing.
5 → A conversation with someone who is as deep a listener as they are a thinker
One of my best friends lives in Ireland. We met during a Master’s in Contemporary Dance Performance at University of Limerick. I miss her dearly. We don’t talk as much now that she’s become a mama, but I cherish our conversations.
She is someone with whom I can truly say anything, even if I’m not sure that I mean it. I can experiment with my truth with her. And that is powerful.
___
From 2019-2021 I ran an internship program in arts administration, production, PR and social media. At one point, I had a team of 6 interns. We would meet weekly on Mondays.
Every week, I would start off the meeting with a question, usually asking about one of their *favorites*. Knowing someone’s favorite dinner food is mac and cheese offers a story, a world, a journey that you can step into with them.
Knowing people’s favorites feels like a special way to get to know them. And I just love that.
What are some of your favorite things? Anything that you loved as a kid that you still love today?
