Through case studies and theoretical perspectives, we’ll examine how peace can be fostered at local, national, and international levels, recognizing the roles that governments, organizations, and individuals play in sustaining it. In a world facing pressing challenges such as political unrest, economic inequality, and environmental crises, understanding peace has never been more vital. The potential of young people to drive change is truly realized when their skills and ideas are put into action. This was the core message of the just-ended capacity-building workshop organized by the REcAP project, led by WANEP_Regional in partnership with Nkafu Policy Institute and funded by the European Union. The workshop emphasized empowering young leaders to take the lead in conflict resolution, analysis, and mediation through hands-on, practical approaches. This experience aligns deeply with my work as a Research Assistant at Conflict LAB, where we actively engage in peace and conflict resolution initiatives. It was great to have been recognized after completing this insightful training on Peacebuilding, Conflict Prevention, and Countering Violent Extremism. Each module reinforced critical skills that amplify the role of CSOs in tackling violent extremism and advancing peacebuilding from very grassroots levels. The 2024 International Day of Peace focused on the theme ‘Cultivating a Culture of Peace’, emphasizing that peace is a shared responsibility requiring everyone’s participation. This theme closely aligns with our conflict prevention and peacebuilding strategy, known as the ‘area-based approach’. This approach fosters collaboration among all community stakeholders, ensuring they work together towards a common goal of sustainable peace. Reflecting on this theme led to deeper consideration of young people’s roles in peacebuilding. What does peace mean to them? How would they define it? While experts often discuss peace, we seldom seek young people’s perspectives. To bridge this gap, I developed a template in 2024 to collect insights from the young individuals I had the honor to engage with. Their responses offered invaluable ideas for cultivating a culture of peace. To truly build such a culture, we must start by listening to and learning from the younger generation.
