It was a real privilege to gather learning from the projects, partners and others involved in TRANSforming Futures as part of this evaluation report (conducted in my freelance capacity). While the programme and evaluation are focused on trans-led work, I hope there are also lessons for other comparable multi-year programmes, particularly those that have several workstreams and/or support grassroots groups. It is so hard, especially when you're younger (and even moreso if you're neurodivergent and/or have mental illness), to truly be able and willing to put vulnerability and authenticity out there; but as Jaymes said, it is *vital* in the success of people-centered & mission-driven organizations. Having that touch of tangible humanity to help connect with your clients/customers/patients is so, so important - As a healthcare worker, working in home health and residential facilities, building rapport with elderly individuals who have spent their lives relying solely on themselves often requires deep authenticity and vulnerability - sometimes on the verge of being "unprofessional". Many face tremendous difficulty accepting help, even when it is clear from the outside that doing so would improve their quality of life. Whether due to past experiences that have caused trust issues or feelings of embarrassment at the thought of needing assistance for the first time, these individuals may struggle to allow themselves to be vulnerable. My role is to create a space where they feel safe enough to trust that receiving support is not a sign of weakness, but a step towards maintaining their dignity and independence. Healthcare is far from the only industry in which this approach is necessary. That touch of vulnerability and authenticity often bridges the gap between you being seen as someone strictly doing a job, and being viewed with, and for, the humanity you inherently possess.

Co-led with Consortium of LGBT+ Voluntary and Community Organisations and funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, the project empowered trans people and allies to create innovative, trans-led solutions to key challenges. Announcing the 2024 Equitable & Inclusive Communities Fund Grant recipients! Four local organizations have received grants totaling $2,250 to support community-driven programs focused on equity and inclusion. These grants will fund projects that uplift populations facing systemic barriers, including geographically underserved communities, communities of color, immigrants, refugees, English language learners, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ+ communities, and other underrepresented groups. Some thoughts I have about #PrideMonth this year and how organizations can support the LGBTQ+ members of key audiences.

LGBTQ+ led and serving organizations are chronically under resourced. According to Funders for LGBQT Issues’ Grantmaking by US Foundations Report, for every $100 awarded by US foundations in 2021, only 28 cents specifically supported LGBTQ communities and issues; foundations allocated less than 4 cents per $100 of their total giving to trans communities and issues. These numbers are alarming, but they speak to the lack of investment in LGBTQ+ led and serving work - Which is why organizations like ours are so reliant on community donations! It’s not all about the talk. Its about teaching. I love that the Trevor Project offers training programs for everyone who wants to learn how to help. Directly from their website: “Knowledge that has the power to heal. Competent suicide prevention starts with how we educate ourselves and each other. The Trevor Project offers mental health and suicide prevention training programs and LGBTQ+ education workshops that give everyone the ability to help.” Over the next few weeks I’ll share more about their accomplishments and my personal passion for the Trevor Project. Here is how SAGE, a nonprofit dedicated to addressing issues related to LGBTQ+ people and aging, uses data to reveal unmet needs and ensure their communities are seen. First, SAGE uses data to ensure their programs make an impact by answering questions such as:? -Do our service programs meet the needs of the people they serve? -Has engaging in SAGE programs improved the lives?? -Who aren’t we adequately serving? -What public policies are needed to address the unmet needs?? -Are our training programs effective? Second, they use surveys to gain a better understanding of community satisfaction and uncovering unmet needs. For example, SAGE discovered through intake interviews a high incidence of housing insecurity among its constituents. This led to the creation of the?National LGBTQ+ Housing Initiative. Finally, because they collect so much quality data, they are able to help partner organizations answer questions about their community. They worked with the National Aging and Disability Transportation Center (NADTC) to better understanding of its clients’ unmet needs and provide better transportation options.
