?? Recap Time! ?? Certainly late to the game in covering but I wanted to highlight the 2024 Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational, Presented by EvoShield. It marked its fifth consecutive year of electrifying softball action, featuring 16 powerhouse teams, including renowned names like LSU, UCLA, Texas, FSU, and Georgia, competing in 40 thrilling games. This tournament has evolved over the years, blossoming into a premier event showcasing some of the nation's top softball programs. From its modest beginnings, it grew to attract attention and admiration from fans nationwide. But it wasn't just about the game on the field; it also significantly impacted our community. St. Pete/Clearwater estimated that upwards of 8,000 fans filled the stands over the four-day event, injecting over $11 million into the local economy. Events like these underscore the growing prominence of college softball, especially regarding revenue generation. With the rise of women's sports, there's been a surge of interest in collegiate softball, drawing attention from both fans and sponsors alike. While softball may not be synonymous with the massive revenue streams seen in some other sports, stars like Montana Fouts and Maya Brady are emerging as notable figures in the sport, paving the way for potential NIL opportunities in the future. The Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational is more than just a tournament; it's a catalyst for the growth and development of college softball. By circulating news and updates throughout the sports world, these ultimate competitive showcases not only generate revenue but also serve as a platform to attract more eyes to the sport. They play a crucial role in elevating the profile of college softball, fostering its growth and development. Despite being a former collegiate baseball player and avid supporter of the sport, I still find myself tuning into more and more college softball games than anything else. Exciting Innovation or Uncharted Territory? A Look at NIL’s Role in Youth Sports. The recent announcement of Lacrosse Masters NILLY events is a bold new step in the NIL landscape. Offering NIL deals for top youth athletes in lacrosse showcases the rapid evolution of youth sports and name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities. As Lacrosse Masters and Inside Lacrosse set the stage for the next generation of players, several important questions arise about how NIL is implemented at this level. Empowerment Through NIL or Early Commercialization? With $60,000 allocated per event, these deals have the potential to support athletes financially. However, are we giving young athletes the skills to manage these opportunities effectively? Financial literacy and guidance will be critical to ensure they’re set up for long-term success, not just short-term gains. Transparency in Deliverables and Ownership: NIL contracts are complex, and it’s crucial that these young athletes and their families fully understand what is expected of them, who owns the content, and the duration of these rights. Clarity on these deliverables helps prevent potential pitfalls that could impact the athlete’s brand down the line. Role of Coaches, Parents, and Advisors: Coaches, families, and advisors should play an active role in supporting young athletes through these deals, ensuring they align with each athlete’s development goals. Young athletes often need advocates who can balance the appeal of NIL deals with their long-term growth. Are We Enhancing Athletes’ Lives Beyond Cash Deals? The goal should always be to help athletes build skills for life beyond the game—financial acumen, brand building, and community engagement. Without guidance, there’s a risk that NIL at the youth level might emphasize revenue over genuine empowerment. As NIL reshapes youth sports, there’s both immense potential and a clear responsibility to support young athletes responsibly. I’m excited to see what the future holds and hopeful that leaders in youth sports will prioritize the growth, education, and well-being of these promising athletes. Exciting news with The Home Depot announcing their expanded partnership with the NCAA, becoming the official home improvement partner of March Madness! As a proud Jayhawk alumnus, there's no better time of year! Here at Numerator we've segmented NCAA basketball fans and are able to analyze their personas and known purchase behaviors, including their home improvement spending. Here are some Numerator insights focusing on college basketball fan's personas compared to the typical Home Depot customer and their home improvement purchase behaviors over the last 12 months: ?? Compared to the typical Home Depot customer, NCAA college basketball fans skew higher income, are more likely to be African American, male, with higher purchase power while living in rural?areas. ?? Over the last 12 months, NCAA college basketball fans on average made 9.4 trips to Home Depot, spending $72.88 per trip, averaging 4.7 units per basket. ??Over the same time period, NCAA college basketball fans on average made 8.7 trips to Lowe's, spending $86.89 per trip, averaging 5.6 units per basket. ?? The 'Elite Eight' departments purchased by NCAA basketball fans in the home improvement channel in the last 12 months based on Buy Rate (avg. spend per household over the period) were: 1.
