As more summer software engineer internship applications go live for 2025, I'm recalling Alina's post about the trimodal distribution of pay within tech internship opportunities. Most companies fall in the first curve paying between $20-$35 per hour. In the middle sits tech, finance, and consulting firms paying roughly between $45-$60 per hour. And then at the very top are the trading firms and hedge funds which often vastly out-compensate the first group paying $75-$150+ per hour. ?? I recently was reflecting on a past experience with a summer intern where I learned valuable lessons: 1. Just because someone has a pedigree on their resume, does not mean they already have the skillset for the role (which is totally ok!). 2. Just because someone does not have the skillset, does not mean they cannot learn it. Evaluate for potential / ability to learn. 3. Its important to baseline what information is needed for a person to excel in their role, and then ensure it is taught to them! Long before working on Camino, I worked with a computer science intern who had completed a summer internship the prior year at Google. This intern was super smart. Working with them early on, I realized they had some gaps in knowledge which they would need to fill in order to be successful as an intern at our company. I had incorrectly made assumptions based on their experience as a CS major and an intern at google. I spent a few days working with them, and those gaps were quickly filled. I learned a lot through that experience - most importantly, if you hire people who know how to learn, AND provide them with intentional guidance, you will build a strong workforce. #Internship #LearningExperience #SkillDevelopment #onboarding
