In the spring of 2020, amidst the challenges brought by COVID-19, a beacon of hope emerged in the form of Project HOPE, led by the visionary Professor Alan Dennis. This initiative brought together over 400 dedicated students, prospective students, and alumni, who collectively dedicated more than 50,000 hours to support 800 businesses across 54 counties in Indiana. It's inspiring to note that 60% of these businesses were women-owned and 23% minority-led.
But the impact didn’t stop there. Following the success of Project HOPE, new initiatives began to flourish. The "Inclusive Enhancement of Digital Navigation - in Indiana Rural Communities" grant was awarded, aiming to empower rural communities by providing access to digital literacy and online services through local libraries. This project was a game-changer, helping individuals in rural Indiana enhance their personal, educational, and professional lives.
These initiatives sparked a broader movement at Indiana University, with students eager to apply their talents and skills to make a real, lasting difference in their communities. Programs like the Hoosier Consulting Network and DoWhatIsGood, a faith-based organization, have since emerged, all sharing the same goal: to create positive, sustainable change. This project further evolved into what we currently recognize as Hoosier Community Network's goals and purpose.
It's a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, our collective efforts can lead to incredible outcomes. Let’s continue to use our skills, knowledge, and passion to uplift our communities and make a lasting impact! ??
