The PBDW-restored Astor Courts was recently featured in Architectural Digest. We worked on the renovation for over 15 years with two separate owners. Our first renovation got a Preservation Award from the Preservation League of New York State and was the setting for Chelsea Clinton’s wedding in 2010. Recent scope includes the restoration of the 1902 dumbwaiter, which allowed for a catering kitchen in the lower level. I spent a couple days in Miami recently, I noticed a stark contrast between its modern construction boom and the architectural diversity found in New York City. Miami, with its Beachfront views and Beautiful weather, is undeniably appealing (hence its rapid growth). However, it seemingly lacks the rich variety of buildings that embody individualism to the same extent as New York City. In NYC, the skyline tells a story through its architectural evolution. Art Deco masterpieces like the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building exude elegance and historical significance. Beaux-Arts structures, such as the New York Public Library, showcase grandiose designs and intricate detailing, reflecting an era of architectural opulence. Bauhaus-inspired buildings add modernist simplicity, while contemporary constructions like One World Trade Center reflect ongoing innovation. In contrast, Miami's recent growth over the last 20 years has brought a slew of sleek, modern condo projects. While Impressive and well appointed, many of these new constructions tend to be somewhat generic, contributing to a more homogeneous skyline that lacks the same distinctiveness and historical depth of NYC's architectural landscape. Although Miami is beautiful and vibrant, its architecture doesn’t seem to convey the same rich and varied story as that of New York City. Obviously, this commentary is heavily steeped in my own personal opinion. What do you think? Is the Miami skyline becoming a little too bland? #nyc #miami #architecture #newconstruction #realestate

THE INFLUENTIAL: Where Gilded Age Grandeur Meets Modern Comfort: Inside Symphony Townhouse In New York City, where history meets opulence on nearly every corner of the Upper East Side, a townhouse on East 64th Street stands as an enduring monument to the city’s architectural legacy. Known as the Symphony Townhouse, this residence at 163 East 64th Street opens a door to Manhattan’s past while showcasing the luxuries of today. More than a home, it’s a symbol of an era when townhouses became synonymous with New York’s social elite—spaces that were grand, private, and almost aspirational in their exclusivity. The townhouse was originally crafted in 1872 by the Victorian architect John Prague, then reimagined in the Neo-Georgian style by R.D. Graham—a transformation that preserved its original grandeur while introducing the architectural flourishes of a changing city. These historical homes captured public fascination in the 1970s when 24-year-old writer Charles Lockwood published Bricks and Brownstone: The New York Row House 1783–1929. Lockwood’s work, the first comprehensive exploration of New York’s beloved row houses and townhouses, coincided with the rise of historic preservation efforts across Manhattan and revived interest in restoring the city’s architectural heritage. This wave of renewed appreciation for brownstones and townhouses like the Symphony was part of a broader cultural moment, spurred by the newly established New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission and New York Landmarks Conservancy. Together, these groups worked to safeguard buildings that could otherwise be lost to urban redevelopment, and now the city’s historical homes, like the Symphony Townhouse, are in greater demand than ever. Historic Grounds Report What is a historic grounds report? Just as historic homes need to have their architecture and interior furnishings documented, the same is true for the grounds that they sit on. This includes the landscape, as well as the various objects and structures on the property. Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House is in the final steps of a historic grounds report. The uses for this report depend upon the project. However, the most common is that many of these objects and structures have not been described and entered the collection’s database. Documentation may seem unimportant to some (especially if the object has been there for many decades!), but it serves a vital role in helping to preserve them. By describing what something looks like and where it is, it can help provide a baseline for the future care of the object. By looking back at the description, we can notice if something has been damaged or moved. Additionally, by getting historical information about the objects together, it makes it easier to tell the history of the grounds. Finally, alongside documenting what is currently on the property, the report also includes researching past objects, their location, if they were demolished and by whom, or just disappeared. Just like the Butterworth Center and Deere-Wiman House, there are fascinating things to see on the grounds. We invite you to watch for upcoming posts about the interesting history and objects outside the homes! #HIstoricPreservation #HistoricGroundsReport #HistoricLandscapes #MolineIllinois #DeereFamilyHomes #CollectionsCare

Every building has a story, and signs often play the crucial role of storyteller, helping to weave that narrative into the visitor's experience. Our recent work for the Kimpton Fitzroy London, a stunning 19th-century landmark in Bloomsbury, is a perfect example. Known for its fantastic architecture and renowned ornate terracotta exterior, this building has long been an iconic part of London’s heritage. But how do you design signs that respect such history while adding modern functionality? Our solution was to create a sign system that honored the building's character by choosing materials and styles that matched the detailed terracotta exterior. This helped the signs blend naturally with the architecture, adding to the experience without taking away from the building's beauty. Good signs do more than guide—they tell a story. PS: How are your signs contributing to your building’s story? #rivermeade #architecturalstorytelling #kimptonfitzroy #designharmony
