Thinking about 3rd, 5th, 7th shots today... and how this process of execution, strategy and communication feels a lot like what dynamic work teams do on the daily.
A critical strategy in pickleball is to get to "the kitchen" (the No Volley Zone line that is 7 feet from the net) to be in an offensive position and win the point. This is easier said than done because 3 of the four players on the court start the point at the baseline and have to make their way there. It's especially challenging for the serving team because they have to wait for the return of serve to bounce before they can take it - and by then both of their opponents have (probably) moved forward and are in an offensive position. There are various strategies for how to get to the line, including a drop shot into the kitchen that gives you time to move forward. This shot isn't easy and if it's not a good shot, the other team can take advantage of it and keep you back. So, often times you have to be patient and make successively better shots to be able to move forward. Today, I'm pondering just how much patience and communication is involved in making this transition, and how well we have to respond to our opponent's shot. It's one of the many things I love about pickleball - solving a problem with a partner in the midst of play. You MUST be great communicators, strategists AND executors to win the point. Sounds a bit like dynamic work teams, doesn't it?
