Preventive healthcare may prevent river blindness in some areas. Please a moment to see the link below and follow the END Fund to learn more about what you can do.
Malawi is inching closer to its goal of eliminating river blindness. Through community health workers like Sheikh Yusuf, the country is distributing preventative medication to communities in endemic regions, following the lead of countries like Niger that recently announced elimination of transmission of the disease. Sheikh Yusuf and his team use measuring sticks to determine the quantity of medication each recipient requires. In high-risk communities, they travel door-to-door to ensure all receive the medication. The mass drug administration (MDA) aimed to treat a population of more than 1.6 million people spanning 6 districts in central Malawi.

The Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal (EMHJ) is calling for submissions for an expedited special issue that will focus on the impact and implications of the war in Gaza Strip for healthcare, as well as lessons and policy implications for the healthcare sector. The ongoing conflict in Gaza Strip continues to take an unbearable toll, with severe implications for healthcare. Since the beginning of the war in October 2023, hundreds of aid workers have been killed and nearly all of the Gaza Strip population (about 85% as of end of May 2024) has been displaced severally. Many of them live in makeshift, overcrowded, unsanitary, and insecure shelters and camps with insuficient food, water, healthcare, and other basic necessities. The frequent attacks on healthcare have caused fatalities and grossly degraded the capacity of the health system to respond to healthcare needs in the territory. Only 16 of the 36 public hospitals and less than half of the primary healthcare facilities are operational, partially or minimally. One of the direct consequences of these is the outbreak of diseases such as diarrhoea, respiratory diseases, hepatitis A, etc. For example, there has been more than 23-fold increase, above the 2022 figures, in the monthly reported diarrheal cases among under-5 children, and, recently, polio virus was detected in wastewater samples. Did you know that regular handwashing with soap and clean water can reduce the risk of diarrhoea-related illnesses by up to 30% and respiratory infections by nearly 20%? These are staggering numbers, especially when we consider how easily preventable many of these illnesses are. Hand hygiene is a simple yet highly effective way to improve public health, especially in areas where access to healthcare is limited. At PSHAN, we are committed to promoting preventive measures that make a lasting impact on the health of communities. By educating the public on basic hygiene practices like handwashing, we can help curb the spread of disease and reduce childhood mortality rates across Nigeria. Want to learn more about how we are driving public health education and improving access to essential healthcare resources? ??On today’s #DeepDive, we highlight Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), also known as elephantiasis, a debilitating mosquito borne disease affecting millions worldwide. With 657 million people at risk, and 51 million still infected, LF remains a major health challenge globally. In Kenya, 2.4 million people are at risk, primarily across the coastal regions, where it causes significant physical, social, and economic burdens ?? Kenya's Ministry of Health has achieved notable progress, with over 90% treatment coverage through mass drug administration, reaching 100% geographical coverage in 2022. However, much more needs to be done and at #GANE, we are dedicated to amplifying these efforts by advocating for broader healthcare access, increasing awareness, and providing support to affected communities. Together, we can #EndTheNeglect and improve lives for a healthier community ?? #EndNTDs #GlobalHealth #CommunityAwarness

According to recent data, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a growing burden in Kenya, affecting a significant portion of the population. The Kenyan government has implemented various initiatives to combat the spread of NCDs, including promoting healthier lifestyles, increasing access to healthcare services, and raising awareness about the importance of regular screenings. As individuals, we can also play a crucial role in preventing NCDs by making healthier choices in our daily lives. This includes adopting a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption, and prioritizing regular health check-ups. Let's work together to reduce the prevalence of NCDs in Kenya and ensure a healthier future for all. #NCDprevention #HealthyLiving #GovernmentInitiatives #KenyaHealthcare

??NEW MSF REPORT: Gaza's "silent killings" Gaza’s healthcare system has been devastated, with men, women and children at increasing risk of acute malnutrition and with their physical and mental health deteriorating rapidly. “How many children have already died of pneumonia in overwhelmed hospitals?” asks Mari-Carmen Vi?oles, Head of MSF Emergency Programmes. “How many babies have died because of preventable diseases? How many patients suffering from diabetes are left untreated? What about the deadly consequences of the closure of kidney dialysis units in attacked hospitals? These are the silent killings of Gaza not reported in all this chaos, caused by the collapse of the healthcare system across Gaza.” Drawing on medical data and patient testimonies, the report demonstrates that living conditions in Rafah today are not conducive for survival. There is a desperate shortage of clean water for drinking or bathing, while rubbish and raw sewage accumulate in the streets in this tiny wedge of land now hosting more than one million people who were forcibly displaced from the north of Gaza.
