I'm excited to be presenting at the Best Friends National Conference July 11-13 in Orlando Florida. My presentation is entitled "From Buzzwords to Lifesaving, turning misunderstood topics into improved shelter lifesaving." During my presentation I'll be talking about terms such as "Length of Stay", "Capacity for Care" and "Managed intake". Often these topics are misunderstood -- which can lead to unnecessary animal deaths in the shelter, poor communication with the community and erosion of public support. Our animals like to eat and they can eat a lot! That's why we are grateful to FirstEnergy for their regular donation of tree trimmings, or browse, to our animals! As the electric company routinely trims trees throughout the community to help prevent or minimize the impact of tree-related power outages and enhance electric service reliability, we collect a portion to feed the animals. Our hoofstock and primate species, such as the lemurs, alpacas, goats and tufted deer, receive the trimmings daily. The sticks, leaves and buds are high in fiber and an important part of their diet.
