TIME TO QUIT TWITTER & FACEBOOK? Meta is abandoning the use of independent fact checkers on Facebook and Instagram, replacing them with X-style "community notes" where commenting on the accuracy of posts is left to users. This is happening "In the US first." But that statement as a clear expression of an intent to apply the same idea elsewhere. Musk's attacks on those in Europe that my block the actions of the people like him and Zuckerberg seem to be just part of the strategy to get them out of the way, therefore. I already quit X when Musk took over. I now plan to quit Facebook to. "In the US first, may be "in the UK soon" which would force me to quit. But I think I will quit Facebook very soon in support of the sensible Americans who are horrified by what is starting to happen before Trump has even been re-inaugurated. Democracy is getting closer and closer to the cliff-edge! In a video posted alongside a blog post by the company on Tuesday, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said third-party moderators were "too politically biased" and it was "time to get back to our roots around free expression". The move comes as Zuckerberg and other tech executives seek to improve relations with US President-elect Donald Trump before he takes office later this month. Trump and his Republican allies have criticised Meta for its fact-checking policy, calling it censorship of right-wing voices. Speaking after the changes were announced, Trump told a news conference he was impressed by Zuckerberg's decision and that Meta had "come a long way". Asked whether Zuckerberg was "directly responding" to threats Trump had made to him in the past, the incoming US president responded: "Probably". https://lnkd.in/eFRVK_wV A great explanation of what Musk is up to is offered by Ros Atkins: https://lnkd.in/eYJ4cjmn #Trump #DonaldTrump #Musk #ElonMusk #Zuckerberg #MarkZuckerberg #Twitter #X #META #Politics #FarRight #democracy #freepress #socialmedia #corrption #factchecking #propaganda #

Paul Barnett - a lengthy counter argument to consider in line with our collaborative work on re-empowering Civil Society. The shift toward decentralising how we determine what's true, credible and real, is a critical step towards believing in the capacity of people and communities to possess greater levels of self-governance in their understandings and interactions with the world. Against this basis of thinking (that I know we're aligned around), we can consider how Facebook’s move to Community Notes aligns with important democratic principles in terms of empowering diverse voices to shape public discourse. If we are to pursue pathways towards a more democratic future, then we simply must reduce the reliance on centralised gatekeepers that are all too often perceived as biased and disconnected from grassroots realities. The act of decentralising truth-verification encourages collaborative sensemaking and fosters shared responsibility for evaluating whether information is credible or not. We cannot continue to maintain the blocks in society that prevent, or increase levels of friction in, building greater levels of resilience and trust within our communities. (... cont.)
From my perspective, ALL of the existing "social" networking services need to be creatively destroyed -- by developers of new, more mature *business-quality* networking services. Such services should focus on goals, objectives, and reliable performance indicators, rather than what anyone thinks and says off the top of their head at the spur of emotionally charged moments. I have never used X (Twitter) and am inactive on Facebook, although I do enjoy using it for its rightful purpose, which is to keep track of actual friends and family members. While I am highly active on LinkedIn, that is only because it seems to be the best that can be done at this point. However, despite repeatedly soliciting my views, its leaders have continued to ignore my suggestion to build support for the #StratML standard into LinkedIn. So I will continue to look for partners to help build such a service(s). Meanwhile, although it is not a good reason to use Facebook (or X), if I were inclined to do so, the fact that they no longer intend to empower an elite group of censors to determine what I can and cannot say would make me *more likely* to use it, definitely not less. What I care about is not what others say but rather what they intend to do.
I do not use X, and I believe that I will not be using Facebook. Misinformation, trolls and bigotry aren't what I want or need from my interactions. I see no valid ethical reason for using a platform that fundamentally and deliberately opens the door to bad actors.
I understand your point Paul; here are some other considerations that should really be the focus here. 1. These “sites” are not for us, they are for one thing…theft of personal Intellectual Property (data). If we steal their code we go to jail, they can steal our life history with no compensation. Until the user is paid reparations for years of abuse and starts paying users for their data; you should avoid as much “social media” as possible. 2. MZ is just now understanding the fake “free speech” scam EM has built at X. When you censor people, you get inaccurate data sets; therefore the invasive AI they are building becomes inaccurate for themselves and the governments that subsidize them. Often the gov GIVES tech to the “special” individuals, tech paid for with taxes!?? 3. These monopolies are luckily receiving pushback from countries and that is affecting their goal of Capitalist Globalization and resource Colonization. I’m not a super religious person, but there is something to be said about NOT worshipping FALSE IDOLS (billionaires, celebrities, politicians) They are manufactured to fool and distract you. Have a great day, hope this helps.???
Left years ago... I am more worried that LinkedIn is going the same way and that the algorithm is increasingly optimised for everything that makes Microsoft get more data but less useful for me. The advertising model has been broken for a long time, but I expect we will enter a few phase of brokenness before collapse
Short answer? Yes.
