The Palomar Group is ready to help our clients make money after a successful trip to the ICSC conference in?Vegas. Here are some key takeaways from the event: Unanchored street retail centers are stealing the spotlight post-Covid, drawing both investors and shoppers alike. With hybrid work schedules becoming the norm, people are flocking to strip centers near their homes more frequently. Traditionally the domain of mom-and-pop owners, this sector is now witnessing a surge of institutional capital infusion. And guess what? Consumers are loving the in-store shopping experience, even as store sizes shrink. Across the US, retail vacancy rates have plummeted to historic lows, while new construction has hit rock bottom. Why? Blame it on skyrocketing construction costs linked to higher capital expenses, wages, and overall construction costs. As long as construction costs stay high, the scarcity of supply will continue to be a key challenge for the retail sector in the foreseeable future. In other news, ALDI USA's acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, including Winn-Dixie and Harvey's, is making waves. With an eye-popping addition of 400 stores, Aldi is sprinting towards its goal of opening 800 new stores by 2028. Expect a phased approach to store conversions, with around 50 stores kicking off the transformation process in late 2024 and the bulk rebranding as Aldi in 2025. But fear not, a significant portion of Winn-Dixie and Harvey's will still fly their current banners. Here's an interesting tidbit: Spaces smaller than 2,500 square feet hogged more than two-thirds of executed leases in Q1 of 2024. And when it comes to the Quick-Service Restaurant (QSR) arena, heavyweights like McDonald's, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Wingstop Restaurants Inc., and Dutch Bros Coffee are on a serious expansion spree this year. Big Box leases (50,000 square feet and up) accounted for less than 1% of all new leases and less than 6% of space. But hey, don't underestimate the biggies like DICK'S Sporting Goods, BJ's Wholesale Club, Bosse Pickleball, and Chicken N Pickle—they're still in the game! It’s very easy to get lost into Xmas and not come out on the other side till mid January but today was important that I spoke to my team as a whole and sent them a message of the year we have been through and some of the highlights on the ever growing reputation and store we have. We are well into January reset. We have come out of Xmas very very clean and now looking at what we do in the quieter January and February to grow our team again and move the store forward. On this New Year’s Eve I’ve thought it was poignant to share with you the success of the year and also our current standings in the buisness as we go into 2025 even bigger and even better. 2024 has been a tough year and ever changing time for the store and for you all as colleagues and I want to thank you all for your hard work to get us through. One of the top stores on region for the shrink scorecard Over 1,300 new customers coming into store with the more card and a 25% increase on swipes. We’ve also gone from 2.1 ?? to 4.1???????? on google reviews. Which trust me when I tell you is a huge huge improvement and has a strong impact on our customer flow and testament to the hard work of you all. I’d also like to mention the cafe which 2 years ago was in a place of having a detrimental effect to the business and with the hard work and dedication gone into it we are double digits lfl green on sales and so far this year in 10 weeks made nearly 100k in there. Fantastic work. Overall one of kendals most successful years for a very very long time. I’m very aware of all your pride and passion for your store and we sometimes would all like things to “stay the same as they were” but we have to evolve and move with the fast pace the buisness and world changes at. I hope you all have a fantastic new year in whatever you are doing with friends and family and again my heartfelt thanks for all your hard work and dedication You have all been fantastic”

We stopped into Chutters this weekend in Littleton, NH for some post-hike candy. For the past 40+ years we’ve read stories about how independent retail like this around the country has gone bankrupt in the face of competition from sprawling exurban shopping malls, WalMart, Amazon or a variety of other Boogeymen. That hasn’t happened to Chutters, which is perpetually crowded and is a destination year round. All they had to do to protect their business from competition was maintain the Guinness-certified World Record for longest Candy Counter at 111 Feet. In reality, it isn’t that hard to execute. The Candy is in hundreds of self-serve glass Jars which allows for great variety (like 20 different kinds of salty licorice) without a ton of Labor. The key is that they came up with a DIFFERENTIATION plan, and stuck to it. There are 4 primary ways a retailer can feasibly differentiate from it’s competitors: 1. Price 2. Customer Service 3. Experience (Aka Fun) 4. Product Assortment EVERY retailer needs to protect their differentiation base or they won’t be around 10 years from now. If you are Wal Mart, Aldi or Dollar General, you can differentiate on Price alone and win most of the time. Otherwise, you’ll need to differentiate on Service, Experience, or Assortment. At Pod Foods when we talk about delivering innovation into retailers what we are really talking about is giving retailers a different assortment than their competitors so they can protect their business. ??Retailers: how many of the items that you are buying from your Primary Distributor are NOT already available in your larger competitors? ??The answer is much smaller than it needs to be. This is why EVERY retailer needs a reliable Strategic Secondary distributor who can defend their diffentiation base. ??What is YOUR Cost-plus markup at UNFI or KeHE, compared to these larger competitors? ??Are they allowing you to add the differentiation you need quickly, or are you required to wait 12+ weeks and/or commit to 20+ Points of Distribution PER DC beforehand? ??How can you win if you are selling the same product at higher prices and lower margins? #innovation #differentiation #emergingbrands Julie Pryor Caroline Grace Simon Huntley Jessie Kimsey Rebecca Stephens, MBA Clint Chao Wayne Bennett Whole Foods Market Safeway Russell Heiman Flowspace Total Quality Logistics
