New diversity push aims to increase representation of attorneys with disabilities in U.S. law firms Attorneys with disabilities are vastly underrepresented at U.S. law firms, but a new diversity push aims to change that. Just 1.4% of law firm lawyers identified as having a disability, according to a 2023 report from the National Association of Law Placement. Those numbers are far below the national figure of 21% of the U.S. working population who identify as having a disability. Diversity Lab, an organization promoting diversity and inclusion within law firms and legal departments, has announced its Disability Inclusion Commitments, a pledge signed by over 90 law firms in the U.S., U.K., and Canada. The firms have committed to removing barriers affecting lawyers with disabilities, increasing hiring of disabled individuals, and conducting annual surveys. Attorneys with disabilities often hesitate to self-identify due to fear of judgement. The signatories include?Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates;?Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP; and?Mayer Brown. "The barriers to disability inclusion [in the legal profession] are systemic," said Haley Moss, an attorney with autism. "Just 1.4% of law firm lawyers identified as having a disability, according a 2023 report from the National Association of Law Placement. That number was so small that NALP said it couldn’t draw any conclusions about long-term trends. Still, that figure increased from 0.6% of all law firm lawyers reporting a disability in 2019." #lawfirm #legalindustry #lawfirmnews

Law firms have been slow to create clear pathways for those with disabilities to enter and then thrive in the legal profession. Things are changing, but is the pace fast enough? Many thanks to those who contributed to this article focused on students and those at the junior stage of their legal careers: Pippa Rogerson at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, Penny Morrison, Chris Seel, Reena Parmar, Chris Edwards, Paul Bennett and Millie Hawes. A specialist court for parents with Learning Disabilities? We've had family drug and alcohol courts for a long time, bringing together specialists to provide more tailored support for parents. What about a similar model for parents with learning disabilities? It could make the whole court process far more accessible to parents by routinely using intermediaries, slowing down and explaining what is happening to parents and bringing together children's social workers and specialists in learning disabilities to ensure that parents get the support that they need for as long as they need it. The article states that assessments for parents with learning disabilities are done using PAMS. PAMS is an outdated model, which has closed and is no longer providing training or support. Miles & Partners, you can find out about ParentAssess, the specialist framework for parents with learning disabilities, by signing up to a free legal workshop on the website at www.parentassess.com.
As we reflect on Learning Disability Week, our family lawyer Sherma Polidore writes in The Law Society Gazette on the cases that family law practitioners see all too often – where one or both parents have a learning disability and the local authority issues proceedings because of concerns about the ability of parent(s) to cope with caring for a child. All too often, such cases do not have a positive outcome. Do these parents feel seen? Read all about Sherma's ideas for improving their experience in the Gazette. ?? ?? ?? https://lnkd.in/dFS7589U Mencap
