Digital Biscuit Tin 2023 - Westminster - Placemaking Maybe not what you expect of 'Westminster' but not all of London is High Rise Offices and Penthouse apartments. I'm not a fan of the term 'Placemaking' (It always sounds to me like laying a table) as my preference is Urban Landscaping, however 'furnishing' an Urban Area really turns a space into a community. With so many people now living alone, an outside space where they can sit and chat, and in many cases, grow flowers or veg, these areas are capable of building communities. Whilst I lived, as a kid, out in the 'Sticks' outside London, I had many friends who grew up in these developments. The play area was in the centre and the flats surrounded them, giving the parents a good view of what was going on., and being able to throw the odd football, frisbee, or tennis ball back. Landscape Furniture has to be well designed, robust (sadly) and easy to maintain. It has to tick all the boxes on sustainability and safety. Having met all of that, it has to look good as well. When we are having the 'debate' (However hopeful that may be) on housing, its important that we build housing where it is needed most, not where it suits the developers. Cities and towns have plenty of spare space so that those living there are not reliant on cars and have choices for Public Transport. (Bus, Train, Underground, Tram??) Good landscape planning and design builds communities where people meet up and chat rather than houses where people fence themselves in. #photography #urbanlandscaping #london

This car-parking building on Hereford street with a Timezone arcade in the ground floor has actually became a bit of a meme online. It's right in central Christchurch, less than a block from Cathedral Square and on the backside of Cashel street. It's a basically a big concrete wall, set about 20 meters back from the road. The carparking building is somewhat a part of the BNZ Centre, as well as Oxford Terrace. When I first saw it around when it opened last year, I was somewhat bemused and disappointed that building looking like this will be allowed in the central city (let alone another parking building). However, since then I've seen a few photos of this building a numerous social media sites/posts, often with little context besides something like "look at this big strange ugly concrete building". Even seen foreigners repost photos of it and talk about it. It goes to show this is not a regular building. Often dubbed the "brutalist arcade" Walked past it again yesterday, and nothing much has changed. Anyone know if there are any plans for it/the site in front of it which is currently a bare patch of grass? Also, what are people's thoughts on it? #christchurch #newzealand #architecture #urbanplanning #nz

Building owners Sean McCauley and Ron Harrison are working with city officials to create a new mural on their W. 4th Street building. The original mural was removed due to structural issues, including failing stucco that posed safety concerns. The building owners state they plan to "depict a similar and more inclusive scene for the community". The design for the new mural is not yet finalized, but the owners are working with a muralist who has done work on their downtown Pittsburg buildings. The mural is described as "historic," meaning that it depicts a specific period or events from Antioch's past. The challenge for the designers will be to create a mural that is both historically accurate and more inclusive, potentially by expanding the representation of different groups that were present during the depicted era but may have been overlooked in the original mural. Grant funds have been secured for this mural and others in the area. The building owners are investing $650,000 to $700,000 in improvements to the G Street block between W. 3rd and 4th Streets. McCauley and Harrison have been actively investing in #Rivertown, purchasing and improving multiple buildings and bringing several restaurants to the area. Sylvia's Florist will be opening in one of McCauley's buildings at 101 H Street, further contributing to the area's revitalization. https://lnkd.in/g7WFsdFY?

Brooklyn Bridge Park's existence is nothing short of miraculous. Two decades ago, the waterfront below Brooklyn Heights was a desolate area of decaying wharves, but today it is an 85-acre civic masterpiece. This transformation is a testament to the power of imagination and dedication, primarily driven by MVVA, a team of landscape architects led by Michael Van Valkenburgh. They meticulously designed the park, turning abandoned concrete into lush hills, meadows, and wetlands. The park is a blend of various landscape styles, creating a unique urban edge that balances beauty and resilience against aggressive weather. Brooklyn Bridge Park is a vital part of New York City's waterfront revitalization, connecting neighborhoods and providing a continuous promenade from Atlantic Avenue to the George Washington Bridge. This green space not only offers recreational opportunities but also addresses environmental challenges, such as mitigating floods and surviving extreme weather events like Superstorm Sandy. Its success serves as a model for urban parks worldwide, demonstrating how cities can adapt to climate change while creating spaces of joy and beauty. Despite its urban setting, the park fosters a sense of intimacy through its diverse microhabitats and well-planned design. The park's history is marked by complex challenges, including dealing with the proximity of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the need for private development to fund its maintenance. Today, Brooklyn Bridge Park is a vibrant public space, drawing millions of visitors each summer and embodying the dynamic spirit of New York City. The park's design incorporates recycled materials from New York's industrial past, linking its present leisure space with its historical roots. Unlike the isolated retreats of Central and Prospect Parks, Brooklyn Bridge Park actively engages with the city, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and urban vitality. It stands as a symbol of the city's ability to reinvent itself and create spaces that reflect both its history and its future. #BrooklynHeights #BrooklynBridgePark #UrbanRevitalization #LandscapeArchitecture #SustainableDesign #NYCWaterfront #PublicSpaces #ClimateResilience #UrbanParks #CommunitySpaces #NYCHistory #MVVA #UrbanPlanning #CityParks

CVDA was selected with Charles Matsinger Associates to develop a master plan for the sixth floor of the Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Hospital. The Hospital realized that the current layout was not functioning to the fullest potential. The popular Segal Street section of the rooftop was extensively used for physical therapy but was limited in size. To augment the Segal Street theme, the new rooftop gardens were developed using the “Along the Avenue” design concept. The master plan created a series of indoor and outdoor spaces that were interconnected with a loop pedestrian walkway. Small and medium-scaled spaces were further defined with fountains, plantings, arbors, and paving. A major change to the rooftop was replacing the brick parapet with glass, allowing those in wheelchairs a clear view of the city skyline. #rooftopdesign?#rooftopgarden?#healinggarden?#landscapearchitecture

In the heart of the London borough of Greenwich, a decorative, latticed tower stands proud. It is skeletal, raw, and—in the words of the designer—’intentionally naked’. An homage to the scale, beauty, and simple ingenuity of timber construction, Studio Weave’s 33 is open to the elements and, indeed, the public, with the inner workings of the structure on show for all to see. The fact that the three-storey viewing pavilion is designed to resemble a typical Victorian terraced house is about more than just creating a relatable aesthetic. The tower showcases a building material that is becoming increasingly popular, particularly in the UK and Europe. It represents an industry shift in sentiment around timber use, one that is starting to encourage developers to, quite literally, think outside the box. From lower carbon emissions to faster construction schedules—not to mention creating spaces that bring a greater sense of nature and well-being to those who spend time in and around them—the benefits of looking beyond more commonly used materials such as steel and concrete have sparked a wave of ambitious, new developments. https://lnkd.in/dmU-274z

As those who have been following us long enough know, our previous studio spot was located in Hillhurst, above the delicious Peasant Cheese Shop. Our former studio mates included daniel j kirk, Canary Goods, and Intelligent Futures Inc - who have recently moved into to a new building on Kensington Road. Another familiar experience for us this time is that we’re designing a laneway in a nice inner-city neighbourhood, a well-established area with lots of history and a collective feel in the houses, styles, and urban conditions. One thing that’s unique about this project, adding an extra design constraint to the usual challenges faced in laneway housing, is the existing garage on site. You can see that there was forethought into converting the garage into a different use in the future when it was initially built. However, it’s also a challenge because the garage and the house currently occupy essentially the entire allowable site coverage area. The second problem, which is common in all laneways and inner-city densification projects, is the notion of density and how it relates to the quality of space and life in these properties. When you design a laneway house, there are more restrictions on windows towards the sides due to proximity and density of buildings, usually garages, as well as privacy concerns to neighbours. What we want to do, and what we always do with these projects, is a close analysis of the context, including the broader neighbourhood, macro conditions, character of existing buildings, and conditions on-site. To solve the challenges of density and quality of space, we’ve taken a design move from the main house, the offset staggered roof peak, and applied it to the laneway. This sets back our window line, allowing for more windows facing side yards, maintaining privacy, and ensuring effective light capture. By doing this, we create a clear relationship between the laneway and the main house, turning it into a functional moment that enhances the laneway space significantly. Here’s a fence we recently installed in a challenging sloped garden. The project highlights the importance of tailoring solutions to the unique layout of a property. Key details about this fence: It provides much-needed privacy while blending seamlessly with the garden’s natural surroundings. Designed and installed to handle the slope with precision, ensuring both functionality and aesthetic appeal. This is an example of the kind of work we’re passionate about—creating practical, long-lasting fencing solutions that enhance outdoor spaces. If you’re managing housing developments or looking after community spaces, we'd love to share more about our approach to projects like this. #FencingProjects #CommunitySpaces #HousingAssociations #BoundaryFencingUK

What could this new 2.46 acre pocket community look like? Currently zoned R-1, single family – this site could be envisioned to work within the City of Evanston's much anticipated updated Zoning Ordinance and Comprehensive Plan. I have focused on a "what if" scenario that features a 36 unit townhome community. In my previous posts I described this concept's site relationship between the private units and the more public spaces. Other site plans are worth exploring, too – as "out-of-the-box" thinking is encouraged. A typical townhome, as you can see in this post, could center on two different architectural variants. Which one is best? – who knows?? ? A "Chicago" style (depicted) has a more traditional vibe with reddish brown face-brick combined with limestone accents – a look that's very common to the Chicago market where the ubiquitous brick 2-flat reigns alongside the Chicago-style bungalow. … Sorta like a Chicago-style hotdog (sorry, no sauerkraut and spicy brown mustard, New Yorkers) and deep dish pizza. Comforting. Substantive. Predictable. Very Midwestern. ? A "Contemporary" style (also depicted) has a clean, unadorned feel. Simple forms and materials (think Mies) with some horizontal elements (think FLW) to tie the whole thing together. Admittedly, not Farnsworth(y) in my concept here but you get the idea. A contemporary style – it's a Chicago thing, too. There are certainly many other planning concepts and architectural styles worthy of exploration.?What will you think of for this site? Contact me and let's discuss. Let me help you realize the potential of 316 Florence Avenue in Evanston, IL. 847.707.8007 [email protected]

Exciting News from 4016 Fulton! My mother and I are thrilled to unveil our latest project—a 24-unit complex that builds on the successful elements of our previous developments while introducing one intentional change. Key Features: - Proximity: Walking distance to the Light Rail. - Design: Split-level living, filtered water taps, walk-in showers, 10-foot ceilings, and spacious walk-in closets. What's New??We’re reimagining community spaces by replacing private rooftop decks with vibrant common areas above the parking lot. These include: Grilling stations ?? Lounge areas ??? Outdoor fireplaces ?? We’ve noticed that tenants in our other properties often lack opportunities for community interaction, which is why this development focuses on creating shared spaces to foster a sense of camaraderie. We believe that these new communal areas will significantly enhance tenant satisfaction and encourage a more connected community. As we continue to grow and evolve as developers, we're committed to refining our designs to improve living experiences. Are you interested in discussing this project or exploring other investment opportunities with us??Please feel free to reach out! We’d love to connect and share more about how we're transforming living spaces. #RealEstateDevelopment #CommunityLiving #InvestorOpportunity #PropertyDevelopment #Houston #Multifamily #Northsidevillage #Groundup #development
