Embracing Educational Equity: THE Pathway to Greater Access & Opportunity (#8) ? This is the last full week of July, and many schools will begin welcoming back staff and students in the coming weeks. ? As we strive for educational equity, it's important to recognize the significant role advanced courses play in preparing students for higher education. Rigorous academic classes are a foundation for academic excellence, critical thinking, time-management… and the list goes on.?Research consistently shows that students who participate in advanced courses while in high school have higher matriculation rates and college GPAs. Yet, access to advanced courses remains unequal across demographic groups. ? Educators, in a previous post I posed these questions: ·What would it mean for your school culture if you increased access to advanced courses for underserved and underrepresented students? ·How would increasing access at the highest academic levels change mindsets and expectations more broadly within your school? ? As you welcome back staff and students, put culture, mindsets, and expectations at the top of your ‘to do’ list for 2024-25.

Last Saturday I attended Study Smart Tutor’s First Annual Education Conference, and it EXCEEDED my expectations! I not only connected with other members of the company but I had the privilege of listening to Paula Crisostomo, an Education Activist who famously led a mass walk out of students decades ago in protest of poor educational conditions. She not only talked about her experiences but also highlighted the power and importance each person has as an educator and the real difference we can make. I also appreciated the panel discussion in which individuals who were First Generation College Students answered questions about their experience and how we can help drive more equitable educational opportunities. Furthermore, we got to participate in roundtable discussions with other members where we discussed ways to improve our craft as educators and hear about each other’s experiences working with students all around Los Angeles. Some of my biggest takeaways: - Understand that as educators (tutors, teachers, consultants) our impact is far more significant than we probably recognize. - Have patience, passion, and subject knowledge. - Focus on providing individualized instruction: Adapt to students’ unique learning styles, and build rapport with students so they feel comfortable to be themselves and to ask questions. - Make learning an EXPERIENCE (tell stories, use visuals, connect what they learn to what they like) to engage them in the learning process, as well as to enhance memory and even enjoyment. - Especially with younger students, setting clear expectations and maintaining engagement are crucial - Difficult students and/or situations are FANTASTIC opportunities for building connections and reinforcing positive behavior. Ultimately, educators significantly shape students' learning experiences in areas that extend far beyond academic knowledge/development. - Educators are here to provide both academic support and emotional guidance, which impacts students and their families significantly. Help students recognize their potential and empower them to shape their futures, offering career clarity and fulfillment, maybe even a path out of poverty. Can’t wait to participate in the 2nd Education Conference next year!

In an era where #education is the cornerstone of economic competitiveness and innovation, the #UnitedStates faces a pivotal challenge: our K-12 education system is lagging behind. As we navigate through the 21st century, the gap between the education we provide and what is needed to compete on the global stage is widening. Recent studies and international assessments reveal a concerning trend: American students are underperforming in critical areas like mathematics, science, and literacy compared to their peers in countries that lead global education rankings. This isn't just about numbers; it's about the future of our nation, our economy, and our place in the world. Why does this matter? Economic Impact: The quality of K-12 education directly influences our nation's ability to innovate, grow economically, and lead globally. Social Cohesion: Education shapes future citizens, leaders, and thinkers. Falling behind risks not only our global competitiveness but our societal fabric. It's Time for a Bold Reimagining: To reclaim our position as a global leader, we must draw inspiration from nations that excel in education. This means: - Investing in our teachers through rigorous training and continuous professional development. - Revamping our curriculum to emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and STEM education. - Ensuring equitable access to high-quality education for all students, regardless of their background. The path forward requires collaboration, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to excellence. Share your thoughts on how we can collectively work to enhance our K-12 education system and secure America's future as a global leader. #EducationReform #GlobalCompetitiveness #K12Education #STEM #FutureLeaders NYC Department of Education NYC Department of Youth & Community Development After-School All-Stars After-School All-Stars NY Children's Aid Good Shepherd Services Community Association of Progressive Dominicans Jean-Pierre La Cour Commonpoint Queens Los Angeles Unified School District Lennox School District

I am pleased to share with you a chapter that we have published in the book "Designing Democratic Schools and Learning Environments" authored by Harvard University professor Dr. Linda Nathan and her colleagues. Chapter Title: A Systemic Approach to Promoting Democratic Education in Schools. Abstract: Democratic schools are characterized by an intentional alignment of key systems-level elements, including curriculum that promotes equitable opportunities for learning; a positive work environment driven by the values of transparency and honesty, trust, and collaboration; and distributed leadership that builds stakeholder capacity and provides opportunities to engage in data-driven decision-making and problem-solving. In this chapter, we describe?our efforts to operationalize these elements at The Acres Foundation schools. You can find our chapter here, Link -?https://lnkd.in/dXy3Hd83

Few policies in public education have been as contentious as how schools identify and educate their most academically able students. And few are more consequential. Researchers have found that high-achieving students from the wealthiest 20 percent of U.S. families are six times more likely to receive gifted-and-talented services than high-performing students from the poorest 20 percent. Many schools serving low-income students and students of color don't offer any advanced programs, depriving capable students of the academic foundation they need to succeed in college and beyond and depriving the economy of valuable talent. The term “gifted” is itself problematic, signaling as it does to parents, students, and educators that innate ability rather than hard work is the key ingredient of academic success and perpetuating long-debunked stereotypes that differences in academic performance are rooted in race, gender and class. Yet a disproportionate representation of Asian and white students in the advanced programs that do exist has led, ironically, to efforts to abandon advanced opportunities in the name of educational equity. It's a response that would ensure the very students equity advocates hope to help continue to lose out on the academic opportunities that would help them get ahead. The battle between the defenders of traditional gifted-and-talented education and opponents who would dismantle it has played out in heated school board meetings, on op-ed pages and in the courts. It has generated many headlines. But in a handful of states and school districts, a new model of advanced education is emerging that embraces both excellence and equity, a model that supports advanced learning but works to expand the range of students who take part in advanced programs. FutureEd explores the state of advanced programs in public education and profiles three school districts that have embraced the new, third way to deliver advanced education. Excellence with Equity: The Case for Rethinking Gifted Education?chronicles the districts’ goals, their challenges and, ultimately, their successes in building advanced programs that are both rigorous and welcoming.?#giftededucation #giftedandtalented https://lnkd.in/gXcj3jtE

?? Reflecting on Education: Then and Now ?? As someone who didn't quite fit into mainstream education in the 80s, I can't help but look back and ponder how much has truly changed in our educational systems. Feeling out of place, bullied, and longing for a more diverse learning environment, I realise now that there could have been so much more offered to promote unique ways of learning for students like me. Fast forward to the present day, and it seems like we're still struggling to address the core issues in education. ?? Other countries are evolving their approaches to how young people are educated, paving the way for innovative and effective methods that cater to the diverse needs of students. Yet, it feels like we're merely sticking plasters on the cracks of our education system, rather than implementing the fundamental reforms needed to empower both educators and learners. In my role as Chair of Governors, I have had the privilege of listening to the voices of pupils, families, teachers, and senior leaders in education. It's clear that there is a shared desire for autonomy in delivering the best possible education tailored to the unique needs of each community and pupil body. The practitioners on the front lines yearn for the freedom to innovate and inspire, driving meaningful change within their educational settings. I firmly believe that the heart of education requires a transformative reform to truly meet the evolving needs of our society. My own post-school journey, shaped by my determination and guidance from those who took the time to help me grow, underscores the importance of personalised and supportive learning environments. Let's work together to advocate for a system that nurtures diversity, empowers educators, and fosters a love of learning in every student. ?? This is no way a reflect of the wonderful and amazing work educators do. #Education #Innovation #Empowerment #Diversity #FutureOfLearning

Recently, I attended an assembly where the speaker, shared anecdotes about the innocence of Prep students. One story stood out: a Prep child witnessed a high schooler building a house for small animals and concluded that this was a common activity for older students. This innocent perspective highlights the importance of the Prep year in shaping perceptions and laying foundational skills. Prep year is not just about colouring within the lines and playgrounds; it's about instilling fundamental skills that pave the way for academic success and character development. Research supports the crucial role of early education in laying the foundation for future success. Studies, such as those by Torii et al. (2017), highlight the long-term benefits of quality early childhood education on academic achievement and socio-emotional development. These findings underscore the enduring impact of the formative years on later educational attainment and character formation. Without the groundwork laid by Prep teachers, high school students would struggle with basic skills necessary for subjects like Mathematics and English. This resonated deeply with me as a parent of a Prep student, shown below wearing my Tudor bonnet. It reminded me to appreciate the dedication of my daughter's Prep teacher, whose influence extends far beyond the classroom. Reflecting on my own academic journey, I pay tribute to my own Prep teacher, Miss Lie. Despite not recalling much of my own Prep years, it is evident that they laid the crucial foundation for who I am today, holding three master's and a doctorate degree. In a world often focused on high ATARs and higher education, let us not overlook the profound impact of those foundational years. Just as Mr Savill urged high schoolers to remember their Prep teachers, let us all take some time to acknowledge the invaluable role they play in shaping futures and nurturing potential. We are nothing without our Prep teachers. Reference: Torii, K., Fox, S., & Cloney, D. (2017). Quality is key in early childhood education in Australia. Victoria University of Technology.
