Thursday, September 26th, I attended the B.I.D.E (Belonging, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity) summit - Achieving Tangible Change where we were welcomed by Wendy Olayiwola BEM, FRSA, FRCM, RM, RN FNF Global health Leadership Scholar, and hosted by Shivani Sharma This summit was a profound exploration of the unique challenges and opportunities that the global majority encounter, particularly within the healthcare sector. The summit was filled with powerful discussions led by thought leaders and experts Prof. Kevin Fenton CBE Tina Jegede MBE Kendra Schneller Dr Amanda Young Edna Boampong (FCIM) Paul Deemer Tista Chakravarty-Gannon Evelyn Mensah Kristen Smith Dr Cordelle Ofori FFPH Jon Restell Bernadette T. Not only are we seeing this in our hospitals but other non-political organizations and schools. Some warning signs: - An increase in the number of 1:1 meetings, combined with fewer decisions being made transparently in group meetings - More executives being hired who come from more political organizations - Unclear power structures and/or roles and responsibilities - Starting to hire too many executives who just want to lead and don't do any visible "real work" - People not saying what they think openly, often with the veneer of being nice (toxic positivity) - Not enough emphasis on core values - More junior people (often unintentionally) sharing that they are making their decisions based on how they think a certain leader will view their choice vs based on core values or how it will impact customers or the business ~ Jeff L.

This latest article from Noted founder and CSO Scott Pearson really gets to the core of the problem for all community-based health and social services providers, and helps explain why Noted delivers so much value for these organisations: "We need a system shift; to move away from funding just to deliver a particular service and instead funding to improve the wellbeing of people. If we can measure the impact of services on wellbeing, then we can determine where to allocate scarce resources to have the most impact." So let's do that!

"Leadership is about guiding, advising, and coaching from behind or from the sidelines." (it's not always be the front runner, but instead guiding others along their journey) ?? "You make decisions with the best information you have at the time, but don't get paralyzed by decision making. You need to move, and if you get different data along the decision making process you can adjust, but don't get paralyzed by the decision making process." Women in public health, I need your help! ? I’ve been told many things about leadership. The least helpful advice I’ve received…? ‘You could go far if your skirt hemlines were longer and you didn’t sound so much like a child’ I want to hear about some of the worst advice you’ve been given about leadership. ? I’m also keen to hear some of the gems of wisdom you’ve received that have helped guide your leadership journey. The most helpful advice I’ve received…? ‘Don’t race too far ahead and ruminate all possible future complications – focus on right now. Get through each challenge step by step and approach what unfolds as it does with curiosity.’ I’m gathering insights as part of a presentation for the Australian Health Promotion Association National Symposium, where I’ll be delivering a Key Note Address about a different type of leadership based on the unique qualities women have that are often overlooked, and how we can address the systemic and structural barriers that limit leadership opportunities. ? I’ll be sharing some thoughts, including lessons learnt and next steps with Women In Public Health – a network that brings women together to elevate our voices, drive change and reimagine public health leadership. ? I want to include your reflections in the address to demonstrate the good, the bad and the ugly of leadership advice, as we unpack why this happens and how we overcome it. I shouldn't say this, but...... when I see a leadership panel comprised of only middle-aged white people .............. I can't help but feel really disappointed and frustrated. We do have diversity in healthcare! If you are the organiser of a healthcare event and every speaker is white and middle aged, please pause and then cast the net a little bit wider.
