Transitioning from academia to industry is hard. You will find some industry will say you have no experience even with 3 post-docs and that you don't understand the pace of work having worked 80hr weeks on global projects. Part of the challenge is that academia and industry speak two different languages. Academic careers rely on papers and conferences. Industry works on project budgets and outcomes. You will need to remake your curriculum vitae into an industry resume. Metrics, how you can manage projects, budgets, make savings, make money, solve problems... Your skills are transferrable. ? The grant proposals you wrote and won ? Data analysis, documenting results, and presenting them ? Self-management in a poorly defined work area ? Deadlines and project management ? Communication and leadership and much more. Are you a hiring manager in #communications? If so, please read. We had several long, yet energizing weeks after we posted our recent openings at the end of December. Let's just say that I was not prepared for 400+ applications. We went through every single email, resume, video, personal website, and portfolio, and I was blown away by the talent looking for work. It's a great situation to be in as an employer, but honestly, a bit disheartening for my colleagues in PR, marketing, and communications - many of whom have been out of work for weeks or months. That being said, I've kept the applications of some of our top candidates, so if you need senior-level strategic communicators or PR practitioners, please message me with the role you are hiring for, and I will (with permission) share the resumes.
