LEADERSHIP: Presence The real test of leadership presence often comes during crises. In such moments, it’s not about delegating but about being at the forefront, leading by example. It’s about facing challenges head-on, showing resilience, and guiding your team through difficult times.

After a week at ASCO with colleagues, clinicians, researchers, patient advocates, and individuals living with cancer, I recognize the deep challenges we face in cancer care. We won’t solve these challenges alone, which is why Lorna Davis’s insightful TED Talk resonated with me so deeply. Lorna Davis challenges the traditional concept of hero-based leadership, advocating instead for a collaborative approach that fosters collective success. She eloquently explains that true leadership isn’t about individual heroics but about creating environments where teams can thrive together. One of the most striking points she made was about the power of transparency and vulnerability. Davis emphasizes that leaders who are open and transparent build trust within their teams. By sharing our challenges and uncertainties, we can foster a culture where team members feel safe to do the same, leading to more honest and effective collaboration. Davis also introduces the concept of setting “impossible goals.” These are ambitious targets that cannot be achieved by a single individual but require the collective effort of the entire team. This approach not only pushes the boundaries of what we think is possible but also reinforces the importance of interdependence and trust among team members. In my own work in cancer research, I see the need for interdependence and collaborative leadership daily. It is not one team, one company, or one leader who can tackle this monumental challenge alone. It is the collective effort and synergy across the entire spectrum of healthcare professionals, researchers, patient advocates, and organizations that will drive meaningful advancements. This collaborative approach, rooted in systems thinking and transformational leadership, is what will ultimately lead to better outcomes and give patients the gift of time. Davis's perspective on adaptive leadership further highlights the necessity for leader to be flexible and responsive to the ever-changing landscape of healthcare. By adopting an adaptive mindset, we can better navigate the complexities of cancer care and implement innovative solutions that address the evolving needs of patients. If you work in an environment that is matrixed and complex (don’t we all?), I highly recommend this talk and considering how you embrace collaboration with others. It’s a powerful reminder that together, we can achieve the extraordinary.
