?? Exciting Project Update: Passero's drainage innovation results in significant cost savings at Middle Georgia Regional Airport! ?? Middle Georgia Regional Airport (MCN) has hit a significant milestone in Phase One of its Runway 5-23 extension project, thanks to advanced technology that has strengthened the existing stormwater drainage infrastructure. Passero recommended a cutting-edge solution to stabilize and reinforce the three massive, 120-inch diameter corrugated metal drainage pipes beneath Runway 5-23. Instead of traditional, time-consuming removal and replacement, this approach not only extended the pipes' lifespan but also saved Macon-Bibb County millions of dollars. The contractor applied a specialized horizontal pipe lining mortar to the interior of these large, corrugated metal pipes. This mortar, a composite of Portland cement, silica sand, polymers, and a corrosion inhibitor, is fiber-reinforced and enhances the structural integrity of the pipes while preventing the need for complete replacement. A key advantage of this product is its tight pore system and dense paste matrix, which effectively resist moisture ingress, soluble chemicals, and physical abrasion. The existing pipes underwent a thorough cleaning process using a combination of high-pressure water blasting and hand scraping. Following cleaning, the mortar was applied to the interior surfaces of the pipes by centrifugal casting machines. To ensure optimal bonding and effectiveness, the final step involved hydrating the cured mortar, which facilitated a stronger adherence to the pipe structure. Although horizontal pipe lining mortar is typically used for pipes ranging from 24 to 60 inches in diameter, these pipes at Middle Georgia Regional Airport are an impressive 120 inches in diameter. “To our knowledge, this is the first-time pipe lining mortar has been applied to pipes of this size in this area of the United States,” noted Stanley Price, Passero’s Project Manager. Now that the drainage portion of the project is complete, the rest of phase one construction continues with utilities and earthwork improvements. Construction of the runway extension began in April of this year and is scheduled for completion in 2025. #MiddleGeorgiaRegionalAirport #Innovation #RunwayExtension
