CJ Griffin, Esq. Partner and Director of the Justice Gary S. Stein Public Interest Center at Pashman Stein Walder Hayden P.C., was recently quoted in a New Jersey Monitor article titled, “Lawmakers May Allow More Remote Public Meetings Under Bill.” The article discusses a bill introduced that allows a “public body” to hold meetings, vote and receive public comment through electronic means. A public body, as defined by the state’s public meetings act, includes a commission, authority, board, council, committee or any other voting body that performs a public government function. Current law allows government agencies to hold remote meetings only during a state of emergency or public health emergency. CJ Griffin said the bill is a good way to make sure people’s voices are heard. During the pandemic, she said, people became more interested in what was going on in their town. “A big part of that was they could just easily attend the meetings, whereas if you go in person, it’s at 5, 6, 7 o’clock when you’re getting home from work, feeding the kids — a lot of people aren’t going to be able to make it to that meeting,” she said. Curious about how Right to Counsel (RTC) for tenants can advance racial and health justice? If so, check out this new primer for the public health field on RTC that ChangeLab Solutions, Human Impact Partners (HIP), PolicyLink, National Coalition for a Civil Right to Counsel, and Results for America put out recently! I had the privilege recently of being an invited speaker on a UK Faculty of Public Health webinar where I got to share the knowledge and skills I hold around policy engagement and impact. Over 60 people attended the online session, which was focused on 'smoking and vaping: impact on children and young people'. I was invited in for the second part to help clinicians turn their evidence, experience and research into policy change, including a light touch overview of how to write a policy brief. I loved putting this session together, the feedback was great and I can't wait to find more opportunities to do it again! #policy #policyimpact #research #engagement #policychange #policyinfluence

One of the most common questions we keep asking ourselves during our work and programming - "Is this a health system support or strengthening function ? " It's crucial to ask this question at every step of our work as this would define whether we are trying to strengthen the systems to become sustainable in the future. The more we enhance the capacities of systems the better they become independent of external support and this is the key result our work in public health should be aimed at. #healthsystems #systemsuppport #systemstrengthening #publichealth #publichealthmatters

Today kicks off National Public Health Week (#NPHW), the American Public Health Association's annual campaign to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the nation’s health. Today’s theme is Civic Engagement, or the actions that we and our communities take to identify and address problems. When we talk about civic engagement, we must acknowledging the role that power plays in creating the change that communities seek. Power determines access to resources, who makes decisions, who thrives, and who is left behind. In our blog post Building Power to Achieve Healthier and More Just Communities, we delve into a discussion on power and how it can be shared and built upon to transform inequitable systems.
