"We start each meeting with gratitude, just like the team" -Evan Pierce (Celtics' VP, People & Culture) at last week's The PEER 150 conference in Boston. I love this team norm. There is a real power in positivity and gratitude, which sets a team up for continued success. There is also real power in having consistent team norms across an organization; it creates a culture of support and trust. Thanks for the reminder Evan, and go Celtics! Camye Mackey (Chief People, Diversity, & Inclusion Officer of the Hawks) also had a great perspective to share at the PDXYZ-East conference. She said "you can have a building which is beautiful, but it's what you do with the people inside that makes the difference." YES! It doesn't matter if your space holds 16K people, or 16 people; you can take a space and make it theirs, which will build loyalty and community, leading to results. When people can see themselves in a space, they engage more, whether they are employees or customers. So go ahead and ask - what is important to your people and how can we make this space reflect them? Tomorrow I will share the lessons Umang Shah shared with us about perpetual relevance. Spoiler, there is a lot to be gleaned from our Marketing friends when it comes to building culture!

Celebrating Dussehra with the Team: Why It Matters More Than You Think It’s easy to get caught up in day-to-day tasks and deadlines, but moments like these remind us of something deeper: Our roots. Dussehra is more than a festival — it’s a time to reconnect with who we are. Celebrating it with my team wasn’t just about tradition. It was about embracing diversity, building a sense of belonging, and strengthening our bonds. Here’s why I think it’s essential to celebrate such moments with your team: 1. Cultural Pride: Being proud of where you come from empowers you, but also teaches you to respect other cultures. 2. Team Unity: When we share in celebrations, we share more than moments. We create lasting connections. 3. Stronger Bonds: Taking time to step back, celebrate, and reflect creates trust and camaraderie. It doesn’t matter where you come from — what matters is how we grow together. Have you celebrated your roots with your team lately? How did it impact your bond?

Sitting down with Venessa Bennett to discuss how she thinks DEI is viewed and what changes she'd make gave me a real eye-opener into the volume of work needed to ensure DEI is embedded into company culture and not seen as an extension or bolt-on to a business ?? ?? DEI should not be treated as an afterthought or a mere extension of a company's values. Instead, it should be deeply embedded in the very fabric of the organisation's culture. ?? When DEI is integrated into every aspect of a company's operations, from hiring and promotion practices to decision-making processes and employee development programs, it becomes more than just a checkbox on a list of corporate initiatives. It becomes a fundamental part of how the company operates and treats its employees and customers. ?? Let's make it an integral part of our company culture, where diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just buzzwords, but guiding principles that shape everything we do. “Let’s give them a round of applause.” This is one of my favorite things to say while facilitating Raise the Bar sessions. Having a crowd join together, clap, whoop, and whistle, in recognition of their colleague(s) is an exceptional thing to witness and a testament to the remarkable individuals I am privileged to work with. ? This RTB season we’re shining the spotlight on employees who have been with us for three or more years. Sage Advice is an activity borne from feedback received from 2023 RTB attendees. Survey responses repeatedly indicated that team members appreciated the opportunity to get to know each other and share their experiences during RTBs, so we figured, well, let’s create an activity that does exactly that! The activity starts by asking our seasoned employees (3+ years) to stand. The crowd is asked to “give them a round of applause” for their dedication. The room lights up with smiles, some shy while others are absolutely beaming. Those standing are asked to spread throughout the room. Those remaining seated are encouraged to ask the senior employee(s) for their Sage Advice, using a question-starter found on every table. Afterwards, each table reports out on a piece of advice worthy of sharing with the room. Why this activity is a success: ·??????Peer recognition: A culture of gratitude can be a source of inspiration for new team members and ignite a sense of pride in senior team members. ??? ·??????Valuing experience: ?Learning from someone who’s navigated similar challenges builds comradery and fosters genuine mentorship. ·??????Shared goals & commitment: Knowing your colleagues are committed to achieving the same goals and are doing their best each day sets a high standard of achievement everyone can strive for. I am lucky enough to travel to our operational locations across Canada facilitating these engagement sessions. Whether I’m in Chetwynd, BC or Halifax, Nova Scotia, I know there is always one constant; our team members thank and recognize the efforts of their colleagues. #employeeengagement

This tip may seem simple, but so many companies miss it. Be a workplace that celebrates your wins!... When your company gains a new client, launches a successful project, or meets a quarterly goal, take the time to acknowledge and celebrate it. A huge party is great - but isn’t necessary. Your celebration could be as simple as a congratulatory email, a verbal shout-out, or a “wine and cheese, o-clock.” When you celebrate successes, it instills the value of those successes in your team members.
