Huge shoutout to Adam Holtzer and Ryan Reilly for their event at Egress Pros yesterday. Here’s 6 things I learned: 1. My follow up sucks 2. Different networking groups can serve different purposes. Some might be transactional. Some might be about giving back. And some might be to learn from others. 3. “Know when it’s not the right place for you”. This hit hard. 4. Learn to sell your partners’ services before your own. It keeps you thinking about how you can help everyone else. Getting business back is a byproduct. 5. Go deep with your questions instead of broad. Follow up questions are to further explore the answer you got from your first question, not to interrogate others. 6. If you’re at a networking event and you’re overwhelmed or are feeling FOMO, don’t sweat it. Go to the person who invited you or the leader of the event and ask “If there’s one person in this room, that I should meet tonight, who would it be?” If you were there too, what did you learn? Officially Bezinga bound so I figured I'll jump on the bandwagon and talk conferences for a moment. Truthfully, navigating the conference season is fairly new to me even though HIGHOPES has been servicing the cannabis industry for nearly a decade now. Here is what I wish I knew sooner as an ancillary provider to get the most out attending conferences and events. 1. No one wants to talk with a salesman (or saleswoman). Value genuine conversations and interactions over pushing your pitch. It'll come up organically anyways. 2. Set expectations based on the event. No two are exactly the same so be sure you've curated your desired outcomes accordingly depending on the event purpose and it's attendees. 3. Listen first, ask questions second, talk third. People love to talk about themselves so use that to your advantage to learn all the in's and out's of their business. It'll ensure you can make a larger impact when you do chime into the conversation. 4. Network during the day and unwind at night. By the post-conference parties most attendees are starting to get a little burnt out so don't count on creating too many new connections. Instead, reconnect and strengthen those new relationships. Looking forward to seeing some clients and familiar faces over the next couple days. And, of course, building some new connections to grow my network. It is New Year’s Resolution time! I’m boldly putting my resolution on LinkedIn so you can keep me honest! I attend a lot of industry conferences.?(I mean a LOT!?Probably hundreds since I’ve been in the industry. I used to save all the lanyards until that became untenable… so now I only have a selection of my favorite lanyards!) I love conferences and all the people I meet there. But the big downside is that I never feel like I have enough time to talk to all the people I want to talk to.?This year, I’m resolving to reach out to one person a week, who I normally only see at conferences, to stay better connected. And perhaps maybe even arrange for a few in person or virtual coffee dates.?In my life, if it isn’t on my calendar it doesn’t happen, so I’ve just put a recurring event on my calendar to make sure I can stick to this resolution.?If you get an out-of-the-blue email from me, your name may have come up in my networking outreach lottery! How many times have you gone to a conference and not even met the people sitting at your own table? Or passed by dozens - or even hundreds - of people on the way to your next session, where you won't even meet the people sitting at your own table? Well, that's not going to happen at the Event Service Professionals Association (ESPA) 2024 Annual Conference 8 days from now! Because I'll be facilitating the Speed Networking session for 300+ industry professionals on Day 1 of the Conference in Indianapolis, and they're going to form immediate connections with their colleagues in fun ways. I've met with the planning team, and let me tell you, they are ON IT. They want to make sure their conference attendees have lots of good QUALITY, networking time, and Speed Networking is an excellent way to kick off the conference and help them to start making solid connections with fellow industry professionals. The trick to a successful Speed Networking session is strong facilitation with clear communication and *most importantly* a logical rotation schedule. Quick, fun and engaging conversation prompts help, too. Let's GO!
