It is hard to believe that in current times, with such an amount of innovation in the edtech area (genAI and more!), educational institutions continue to play it safe. This is not new, as we know that the vast majority of institutions still structure their offerings with Industrial Revolution education systems approaches. There are so many (almost) free initiatives that can be taken to add innovation to educational institutions... New generations are wired to learn differently than, let's say, 10 or 20 years ago. Those leaders who take the innovation leap will be able to set their institutions to thrive in this new learning world.
I recently attended a school 'Career Fair' and left deeply underwhelmed. The potential careers for students took no account of opportunities in GenAI, sustainability, bioengineering, design or any of the other incredibly exciting fields that are available and currently emerging. While I acknowledge that my role gives me a birds eye view of what is on offer globally, the mismatch between school, university and the job market was startling. Motivating teenagers is critical, especially if we want to lure them away from social media, and this event highlighted that need even more.

Like my dad would start off when he was going to say something potentially offensive..."how do I saaay..." If you or your company are not recruiting at the #NSBE Convention...then, respectfully, what are you doing?!? 18,000+ attendees were at #NSBE50...representing ALL of the Engineering disciplines and science and technology fields ranging from machine learning and medical to cyber, materials, and information systems. MANY of the attendees had law degrees or MBAs reflecting the vast diversity in thought and educational background. MANY of the attendees were Researchers...some had Military experience...some already had secret clearances...and some were looking for their very first opportunity! There were over 1,000 Pre-College Initive (PCI)/NSBE, Jr. attendees and more than a handful who are already doing research or have started their own business. There was a separate Graduate School Conference and multiple Special Interest Groups (SIGs) ranging from Transportation to Aerospace and more. But MOST OF ALL you had a CommUNITY of LEADERS who fought and scrapped to get themselves and their chapters to the convention. In my informal statistical study over nearly 30 years of NSBE membership I can state with a fairly wide confidence interval that no other student or professional organization has as much of a role in the day-to-day activities of the chapters as NSBE student leaders! Sure, they have an advisor, but the onus is ON the student leaders to run, manage, and plan in both the long and short-term. Then...these STUDENT leaders become STUDENT Regional Leaders...then STUDENT National Leaders...or Conference or Convention Planning Chairs. What senior or graduate student do you know chaired a 30,000+ member organization or managed a $60,000+ budget planning a regional conference before they finally returned the keys to their dorm room? And just for the supplemental cherry on top, NSBE Professionals and the phenomenal World Headquarters (WHQ) Staff ensure consistency and provide counsel while adroitly add the extra 'umph' when required. You might not need an engineer, but you should want a NSBE engineer in your organization. They make excellent staff, project managers, researchers, and problem solvers. NSBE is huge on organization, legacy, and culture. Maybe you don't have it in your budget for the biggest booth, but at least give your best effort for a few years and send your best people to reflect your corporation. So, if you're not recruiting at NSBE Conventions, I would suggest you ask your #HR or #recruiting staff..."why"? #STEM #NSBEGOLD #career #engineer #CareerFair #recruiter #hiring #interview #JobSeeker #SummerIntern #CooperativeEducation #science #technology #ComputerScience #AI #SWE #Cyber #EngineeringEducation #GradSchool #MedicalSchool #MBA #LawSchool #PatentLaw #DoD #Military #CivilianCareers #FederalEmployment #Talent National Society of Black Engineers NSBE Professionals | National Society of Black Engineers

From the first flight out of Denver to a late night at Prairie View A&M, yesterday was a blast! I got to present the ‘Launch with Confidence’ seminar for National Society of Black Engineers at Prairie View A&M University, kicking off at 7 PM and wrapping up around 9:15 PM (on a school night!). It was great to meet and speak with such an engaged group, answering questions and discussing topics like career fairs, building your network, and effective communication skills. Feeling nervous is normal, but the key is to lean into that discomfort and grow from it. Huge thanks to Diamondback Energy and Joanna Hord for partnering with me (Exec Crüe) to make an impact on these students! Looking forward to next time! #careeradvice #communicationskills #interns #nsbe #professionaldevelopment

Week 1 checklist for college students: (5 steps to set the foundation for a positive semester) → Mark down key dates for the whole semester Classes, career fairs, student org meetings, etc. Mark them down and review your calendar frequently. → Schedule appointments with relevant resources Need help landing an internship? So do others, so Career Services appointments can fill up quick (same applies to other offices). Schedule them early on. → Introduce yourself to professors Relationships with professors are like compounding interest. Frequent interactions over time yield increasing value. Start the relationship on day one. → Set positive routines Sleeping, eating, exercising, etc. are all essential to your well-being. Build positive routines starting week 1. → Be on time Whether going to your first class, first student org meeting, or first day of an on-campus job be on time. First impressions last. Week 1 sets the tone for the whole semester. A purposeful week 1 leads to a sense of confidence. A chaotic week 1 leads to overwhelm and stress. — How else can you set a positive tone on week 1?

Lasse Palomaki always has some great tips for college students! I'd add to the "showing up on time" tip to give yourself a buffer, even if you think you don't need one. There's always SOMETHING that can delay you getting from point A to point B on time.

In today's fast-paced world, the ability to make the right decision at the right time is what sets successful individuals apart. It's a sign of true intelligence.
