With the departure of the A’s last week, the city of Oakland has been wiped off the professional sports map. This is a stunning development for a city that a generation ago had teams who won national titles five years in a row: Oakland A’s (baseball) in 1972, 1973, and 1974; Oakland Warriors (basketball) in 1975; and Oakland Raiders (football) in 1976. The past 20 years have seen multiple cherished sports teams relocate. Team owners seem to follow a familiar script: once the team starts winning, they demand a new stadium financed by public funds, arguing that their team’s prestige will boost tax revenue and revitalize the community. If they don’t get what they want, they pack up – confident that there will always be another city that wants to be associated with a winner. However, tight budget constraints and activist residents campaigning for “Services not Stadiums” have started to dim municipalities’ enthusiasm to fund professional sports #infrastructure. They are now asking owners to put up more money and sign “no relocation” clauses. New community-focused financial models are also beginning to emerge, using #crowdfunding to offer equity in teams for as little as $100. Learn more at my October 9th Masterclass.
