Attention Construction Professionals: Protect Yourself from Silica Dust! ?? Did you know that exposure to respirable crystalline silica can lead to severe respiratory diseases like silicosis and lung cancer? According to the CDC, approximately 2 million construction workers are exposed to silica dust in their workplaces. Here are some key points to ensure your safety on the job site: Understand the Risk: Activities such as concrete mixing, masonry, and drilling can expose you to dangerous levels of silica dust. Follow OSHA's Standards: Ensure compliance with OSHA’s silica dust standard for construction, which includes using approved dust control methods and providing proper respiratory protection. Use Proper Equipment: Employ NIOSH-approved respirators and ensure they are used correctly as part of a comprehensive respiratory protection program. Your health is your wealth—protect it by staying compliant and using the right safety gear on every job. Interesting article in the paper today that should make all those in the construction and renovation trades sit up and think. https://lnkd.in/eEn94AbJ Silicosis is caused by the fine silica dust created when cutting anything from worktops to concrete. It doesn't take a life time to materialise, it can happen in a few short years and its life limiting or life shortening. If you cut anything that produces dust from quartz worktops, through concrete blocks to MDF please make sure you are wearing correctly fitted FaceFit RPE and yu are either using on tool extraction or water suppression. Its a legal requirement to assess the risks and provide appropriate safety equipment & PPE/RPE to your employees - there is no excuse. If you are not sure which route to take or how to make your work process safe then email us or call and we'd be glad to give you some assistance. #silicosis #notworththerisk

???????????????? ???????????? ???????????????? ???? ???????????? ????????: ?????? ???????? ???? ?????????????????????? Silica dust exposure is a serious workplace hazard, yet some companies continue to ignore the risks, often at great cost. In a recent case, a building stone manufacturer was fined £ 19,000 for repeatedly failing to protect workers from Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS). Despite multiple warnings from the HSE, they failed to implement basic safety measures, putting their employees at risk of silicosis, lung cancer, and other life-altering respiratory diseases. ?? Read more about the case: https://lnkd.in/ersg_iMj At #Lindapter, we believe safety should never be an afterthought. ?? Protecting Construction Workers from UV Radiation: A Vital Responsibility ?? UV doesn't take a holiday – sun protection is not just for summer. UV is a constant companion on the work site. Sunburn and skin damage can occur at even very low levels of UV when outdoors for long periods. And the exposure is cumulative. Skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. Do your workers know how to protect themselves from UV and lower their risk of skin cancer? If you work outside, you’re at risk of exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, even when it’s cloudy. Construction workers are often exposed to the sun for extended periods while working outdoors. UV Reflective Surfaces: Be aware that construction workers not only receive UV directly from the sun but also from reflected surfaces. Remember, skin cancer is preventable, so take these precautions seriously. Choose a zinc-based, chemical-free SPF50 sunscreen for extra protection. Cover up, stay hydrated, and get checked regularly to protect yourself from UV exposure and reduce the risk of skin cancer. ??♂? The Hidden Dangers of Dust in the UK Construction Industry While the risks of heavy machinery are well known, the invisible threat of dust on construction sites often goes overlooked. Dust, especially respirable crystalline silica, poses serious health risks, including silicosis and lung cancer. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), thousands of construction workers are exposed to hazardous levels of silica dust annually, contributing to over 500 deaths each year. Key Tips for Reducing Dust Exposure: -?????????Use wet cutting methods to minimise airborne dust. -?????????Opt for direct fixing over drilling when possible, as it significantly reduces dust generation. -?????????Ensure effective ventilation systems are installed and operational. -?????????Equip workers with HSE-approved PPE like respirators. -?????????Regularly monitor dust levels to stay compliant with safety regulations. By following HSE guidelines and adopting these dust control practices, construction firms can protect their workforce and avoid costly fines. Let’s keep health and safety a top priority on all construction sites. SPIT UKI & Nordics #ConstructionSafety #HealthAndSafety #SilicaDust #DustControl #DirectFixing

Construction dust is more than just a nuisance—it’s a silent health risk that can cause life-changing illnesses and even be fatal. Every year, hundreds of workers succumb to diseases caused by dust, including lung cancer, silicosis, COPD, and asthma. In 2023, 12000 lung disease deaths are estimated to be linked to past exposures at work. The amounts required to do this damage? Shockingly small. As outlined by the HSE, construction dust comes in many forms: Silica dust?from concrete, mortar, and sandstone. Wood dust?from hardwoods, softwoods, and products like MDF. General dust?from materials like gypsum, limestone, and marble. The good news? These risks are preventable with the right measures: ? Assess tasks for dust generation. ? Use water suppression or on-tool extraction. ? Ensure workers have appropriate respiratory protective equipment (RPE). ? Train your team on how to properly use control methods and maintain equipment. Construction workers shouldn’t have to sacrifice their health for their jobs. Let’s ensure everyone goes home safe and healthy at the end of the day. How does your workplace address dust risks? Let's share best practices and keep the conversation going. #Healthandsafety #constructionindustry #Dustcontrol #HSE

Is a shock absorber mandatory during work or not? ?1? A shock absorber is not mandatory in safety harnesses if they are used for fall restraint (to restrict movement or positioning). ?2? However, if the harness will be used in a free fall situation as a fall arrest system, it is preferable to use a shock absorber. ?3? This is to reduce the impact force on the human body so that it does not exceed 1800 pounds (approximately 810 kg). This has many factors that are difficult to calculate on-site yourself. ?5? So, in general, install a shock absorber if you will be using the harness for fall arrest protection. ?6? If you attach the harness to a high point above you in such a way that the harness is taut and there is minimal free fall distance, a shock absorber will not be necessary. ?7? This is because there will not be a significant impact force to deploy it, as you have effectively minimized the free fall distance to nearly zero or just a few centimeters. ?8? Thus, there will be no impact on the body, and the shock absorber will not deploy. ?9? However, if you wear the harness and attach it at your side or below you, there will be a free fall distance if you fall, and thus there will be impact on your body. The force of this impact varies based on many factors, as mentioned earlier, so a shock absorber will be important to reduce the impact force to not exceed 810 kg. In summary: ? OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) does not mandate the installation of a shock absorber in harnesses but does require that the impact force on the human body does not exceed 1800 pounds or 810 kg. ? Generally, it is preferred to install a shock absorber if there will be free fall during a fall, while considering the distance between the harness attachment point and the ground. ? This is to ensure that the person does not impact the ground or any object in the building during a fall. ---

?? Protect Yourself from Construction Dust Hazards! ?? Construction dust might seem minor, but it poses serious long-term health risks. Here’s how to stay safe: 1. Know the Dust: Common types include silica (from concrete), wood dust, and lower-toxicity dusts (like gypsum). All can damage your lungs. 2. Assess & Control: High-energy tools, enclosed spaces, and frequent work increase dust levels. Use controls like water suppression, on-tool extraction, or Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) with APF 20. 3. Prioritise Health: Train for safe handling and equipment maintenance. Regularly review and improve safety measures. For more information, check the HSE website for guidance, or alternatively, contact H21 Safety, and one of our team will be able to help. #SafetyFirst #ConstructionDust #HealthAndSafety
