Two civilizations on opposite sides of the ancient world have a claim to fame in using metal as a form of payment. In 1000 B.C. China, imitations of cowrie shells were produced in bronze or copper, with coins later taking the shape of tools like knives and spades. In 700 B.C. Lydia, modern day Turkey, coins were made of electrum- a silver and gold alloy. These coins were the first to be officially issued by a government body. Unlike modern day coins, the Lydian staters didn’t bear the bust of King Croseus, and were crude and bean-shaped, stamped with a mark of their quality and weight.
